Chapter 219: Trial Of Survival/Dronic Dungeon Part 26
[AN: Bonus Kana 1/7]
Duke Berg's face paled hearing this. "It's over… Brother, I just wanted to bring back the rights nobles once had! What is the point of being a noble if you do not have some form of right?"
"You wanted to usurp me and take over so you can go backwards!? Are you a fool!? That would cause a riot! You are lacking the most important thing to become king, and this is why Father did not make you the crown prince back then. Do you know what that is!?" King Berg was furious. His face was beat red as he yelled at his brother. "You lack a brain! Do you think this kingdom runs on nobles alone? Ninety percent of the money we get to keep supporting this kingdom comes from the people! Without the people, we would not have the resources needed to keep the Dargonia Kingdom at bay. You seem to think that aristocrats are high and mighty, but they are not! Brother, everything you own to this day comes from the taxes of the citizens. If you were to take back one of the laws that keeps the citizens safe from nobles who try to use their status to get away with everything or bring back a law I revoked that harmed the citizens, you would have an uprising. Not only would the regular commoners rise up, but so will most of the military! I can guarantee that within six months of your reign, the entire country would be a mess, and the only ones who will benefit from it the most would be the Dargonia Kingdom."
"But..." Duke Berg could not let it go. The prestige of being a noble having rights over the commoners was what made a noble a noble! It was the job of the nobles to protect the commoners, but this came with the benefit of being able to do as you please. Was this not how it always worked?
"No, buts! As of this moment, brother, you are stripped of your title and demoted to commoner. You will be imprisoned along with all those who colluded with you on this. This means everyone in this room except the young lady there. In three week's time, you will be sentenced to death!" King Berg hated to say this. His brother was the only one left after a long succession battle. He was only able to keep the one brother alive. All his other brothers and sisters were killed during the violent battles that followed.
Duke Berg's face became even paler than it was. The fear of death had quickly set in. Panicking, he yelled out: "Brother, you can not do this! I am your own flesh in blood."
"Flesh or blood or not, you broke the law. You have so many crimes placed on your head there is no other option. I will make use of you, someone who wanted to ruin this country, so all those other nobles who have such thoughts will know their place. This kingdom will never revert back to the old system. Soon more laws will be changed, and equal rights to all men or women will be the new way of life. Arrest everyone here. Even my niece." King Berg lowered his head. His eyes flicked with a hint of sadness. He never expected things to come to this. If he had not followed the young lady that day, he would never have known his brother's plot to overthrow him. This was not an outcome he ever wanted.
Kana, who watched the whole show, was very surprised and highly entertained at the same time. Because what had just happened was like a plot from one of her novels. Sadly she never got to see how such a thing turned out since she only had the one volume. But watching such a good show was surely entertaining. Although, this whole thing was something she had never expected at all. Seeing how things were ending, she watched as the guards took everyone in the courtroom away.
"Miss Kana, I do apologize for everything that has happened. This may not be much, but it should get you by for a while." King Berg waved his hand, and a guard quickly stepped forward and handed Kana a sack. Kana took the sack and looked inside, only to have her eyes widen when she saw all the gold inside.
"This?" She was truly confused. She had done nothing. Why was she getting such a hefty reward?
"This is because, without you, this kingdom would have been thrown into upheaval. Because you were firm in denouncing a crime and seeking justice, I was able to take notice and was able to discover the plot beforehand. Although you may not have done so purposely, you still played a big role in this, and because of this, you need to be rewarded. I hope your days in my kingdom I'll be pleasurable. Also..." King Berg walked right up to Kana and leaned over, his dirt covered face close to Kana's, making her pull back slightly. "For the area you wish to enter, it is best if you go about it the right way. Only then will the barrier disappear. Take the knights exam, work hard and gain prestige. When you are finally able to stand in front of me in my throne room, only then can you ask for access to the lowest level of my kingdom. Take this information as you wish. But trust me, if you try it any other way you will fail even if you burn the entire capital to the ground. You will never move on to the next floor. As for your two little friends, hiding in your hair. They should get married soon. They are quite the cute pair."
King Berg leaned back and smiled at Kana before walking off. But before he exited the courtroom he turned to Bridan and said: "Escort, Miss Kana back to her inn and take the day off and spend some time with your loved one. I am sure she is worried about you."
Kana was stunned. She had never expected King Berg to know everything! He even knew about Aoi and Naru! But the information he just gave her was enough to know that she had come to the right kingdom. Now she just has to work hard…
