“Yi?” Lu Xinyi said his name worriedly.
Shen Yi turned around to see her, and she frowned upon seeing his eyes. She knew that look. She’s been his wife for some time now and knew when something was bugging him. His eyes were hiding his fear and worries with that cold facade that he didn’t want her to see, but she knew… she knew him like a back on her hand.
She placed a hand on his cheeks and ran her thumb against it.
Shen Yi’s resolve faltered. Why was it hard for him to lie to her? He turned his face to the palm of her hand, kissing it gently before settling his hand on top of hers.
Lu Xinyi watched him swallow hard. He lowered his gaze, avoiding her prying eyes.
“Maybe you should stay at Lunar Residence for a while.” His voice was so low Lu Xinyi almost missed it.
“What? What are you talking about? Didn’t you say I should move back here so we can look after the twins?”
His flat, unspeaking eyes prolonged the silence between them.
“There’s a problem… it will be dangerous for you if you stay by my side. This will be temporary until we can clear out the problem.”
“But I feel safer when I’m with you!” Lu Xinyi exclaimed. She didn’t understand why her husband was being like this. If there’s an issue—as his wife, shouldn’t she stick with him through thick and thin? Why was he pushing her away?
Raw hurt glittered in her brown eyes.
“Yi, please don’t do this to me…” she softly pleaded, her eyes starting to water.
It was too much for Shen Yi to see her like this. He dropped his head against her shoulder, his face hidden on her crooked neck.
Lu Xinyi was startled at his actions, especially when he put his arms around her, holding her tightly. She could feel the loud, steady sound of his heartbeat.
“Talk to me. Tell me what’s happening. We promised to be honest and truthful with each other, remember?”
“Someone is seeking revenge against me…” Shen Yi rasped out.
“How did you know? Should we report it to the authorities? Why do I need to be parted from you?”
“He’s been following you these past days. His men took photos of you, of us. I’m not sure what he’s planning to do next, but I can’t let him touch you.”
“Are you saying I should abandon you then? Run away like a coward?” she shakily said, her voice wavering a bit. She wanted to slap herself for doubting him, for being his weaknesses.
“Yes, for you’ll be safe if you stay inside the academy’s premises with your bodyguards. They will have a hard time reaching you. If anything were to happen to you—”
“As I said, I feel safe when I’m with you! There’s nothing different. It’s just another problem we have to resolve together.” Lu Xinyi objected. She pushed Shen Yi’s shoulder, forcing him to look at her in the eyes. “What about the twins? They just arrived and settled their lives with us. If I were to leave, what’ll happen to them? To you?”
“Everything is different, Xinxin,” Shen Yi responded, his voice low. “You are my wife, the mother of my children, my better half. If I lost you, I would be broken…” he trailed off, refusing to have eye contact with her.
Lu Xinyi was rendered speechless on his confession. She never heard him say anything like that before. He rarely admitted his shortcomings and vulnerability to anyone. Holding back her tears, she cupped his jaw in her hand and leaned forward to kiss his lips.
Shen Yi responded to her with eagerness. Sliding his tongue into her mouth, he slanted his mouth over hers and kissed her with such passion and need he hadn’t done before. He explored her mouth languidly, kissing her so effortlessly that her body was beginning to turn into mush, putting her in a daze.
She responded with an eagerness that was so uncharacteristic of her. During their lovemaking sessions, it was her husband who would always take the lead. However, tonight, it was as if she wanted him as badly as he wanted her.
There were different kinds of kisses that Lu Xinyi received from her husband: from flirty kisses to hungry ones, he gave it all. When she felt the intensity of his kiss, she knew he was restless. She opened her eyes and parted her lips from his and saw the smoldering heat in his eyes.
She felt his hand along her thigh, pulling her close to settle on his lap.
Lu Xinyi had no choice but to climb in his lap, welcoming a gentle kiss that greeted her.
“I’m not leaving you. Ever. Please don’t suggest it again. I also don’t wanna lose you,” she sternly said.
“I don’t have a choice to decline, do I?”
One of her hands moved from the side of his face down to his torso. Her fingers slowly unbuttoned his dress shirt.
“We’ll get through this. Together. There are no buts. I’ll not leave you.”
“Alright,” Shen Yi conceded. If she was any other woman, she’d flee as soon as the first sign of danger appears. It was a normal reaction for most people though. Lu Xinyi had been patient with him, trying to understand him to the best of her ability. He couldn’t ask for a more understanding wife when she was around.
“Stop arguing. You can’t get rid of me that easily, President Shen. You know better than that.” She tilted her chin up and let her lower lip touch his lips teasing her husband. Once she unbuttoned his shirt, she ran a hand of his exposed torso.
“I could say the same thing to you.” Shen Yi’s tone was impatient and deep. His eyelids lowered dangerously. He reclaimed her lips again, eager to start their lovemaking.
Lu Xinyi’s hands moved and felt the lines of his body, without breaking their kiss. She felt his strong shoulders and back and loved the way his firm arms held her close. Shen Yi was indeed one of the perfect specimens of men that could easily make women fall in love with him. Pride bloomed in her heart as she thought that this man chose her, and he was hers.
“I love you,” she whispered in-between their kisses. Being here was the best thing her life had given her. Damn all those people who wanted to rip them apart.

“I’m going to meet Sun Ruying tomorrow afternoon,” Lu Xinyi said as she settled next to her husband after their lovemaking. She felt tired but content. She rested her head on his chest while his left hand was busy playing with the long strands of her hair.
“Invite her here. We don’t know yet what’s waiting for you outside,” he replied.
“That’s what I think, too.” She hummed sleepily. Her body was already telling her to go to slumber and rest.
It was three in the morning. Shen Yi woke up with his wife sleeping soundly beside him, an arm on his torso. Rolling onto his back, he stared at the ceiling once again while thinking over his options. Lu Xinyi had made her decision, and he wouldn’t dare to disrespect it. If he was truthful to himself, he didn’t want to be apart from her as well. However, that also meant that the pressure of keeping her safe while he hunted his enemy would rise.
Looking at Lu Xinyi, he propped himself and moved her hair away from her face. He wanted her. He wanted to keep her. Leaning over his wife, he kissed her temple lightly as he contemplated the matter seriously.
He’d hunt Feng Zexian and kill him himself. He could not let this problem affect his wife and family.

Meanwhile, several meters away from Shen Yi’s residence, a man clad in a white shirt and denim pants lit up a cigarette and watched from afar. Isolating Lu Xinyi would be difficult. Shen Yi wouldn’t let anyone—not even a fly—touch her, and yet kidnapping and killing her wasn’t impossible.
He chuckled to himself and leaned against the door of his car.
Shen Yi had taken and ruined everything that he had now it was his turn to return the favor. Soon, though, he’d take back what was his and kill Lu Xinyi to spite Shen Yi. Killing that one person Shen Yi loved and cherished the most would be worse than death.
