Shen Xue took one of the cream puffs and put it on his mouth. He was so excited to try the desserts that he didn’t wait for Lu Xinyi or his brother and ate his share. The outer crust had a golden tan color and somewhat brittle while the inner crumb was dense and fluffy. Each puff was filled with a sweet whipped cream and then dusted the top with powdered sugar.
A crisp little ball of pastry with delicious vanilla filling on the inside. They were irresistible and Shen Xue loved it. Crunchy on the outside but soft inside. He’d tried several cream puffs before but somehow these homemade puffs that his sister in law made were tastier and weren’t bland.
“So how long you’ve been married to my brother?” he asked, not forgetting the real reason why he wanted to talk with her.
“More than a month. I suppose your brother never mentioned anything?”
“He is my brother.” Shen Xue scoffed, “but sometimes I doubt if I know anything about him. Since our parents divorced, he wasn’t the same brother I grew up with.”
Lu Xinyi looked over at Shen Xue, her eyes widening in surprise.
“It’s just that.” Shen Xue tried to find the right words, “he stopped opening himself from everyone. He does whatever he wishes to do and we have no say on that. It sorta came as a shock and everything. I never knew that he will marry someone and kept the details on himself.”
“It’s okay. Your brother did it for me. It wasn’t because he didn’t trust you or anything.” Lu Xinyi smiled matching her eyes. Her hands fishing out the plates and silverware.
“How did you met each other?” Another cream puff disappeared on the plate.
“We met when he was trying to run away from his date.” she smiled as she remembered the day she’d met her husband. The arrogant man who dared to call her Miss Pancakes and then asked for her help. “And I was broken hearted from my previous relationship.”
“Sounds romantic.” Shen Xue laughed. The idea of his brother being romantic was laughable. “How could you tolerate his behavior?”
He watched as Lu Xinyi finished setting the table for the three of them. His mind running so fast. How anyone could stay with his brother without being irritated or offended by him? His brother has never been close to a woman, let alone date them. But Lu Xinyi had wormed out her way to his brother’s cold heart and was able to become his wife.
“You know Shen Xue, sometimes you will meet a person and you just click. It was like I’ve known your brother all of my life that I don’t have to pretend to be anyone or anything and I think it is the same with him. Shen Yi isn’t bad as people called him to be.”
Shen Xue slightly nodded in agreement. Maybe she was right. They might be overthinking and hadn’t tried to understand his brother’s behavior.
“So you didn’t marry him for money?”
Lu Xinyi grinned as she stood by the fridge to take some drinks.
“I marry him for a lifetime supply of burgers and steaks.”
Shen Xue blinked before bursting into laughter. He liked this new sister in law and he was sure he will enjoy sharing some embarrassing stories about his brother to Lu Xinyi.
Throughout their little chat, Lu Xinyi had asked Shen Xue various questions about her husband. Opting to amuse her, he answered most of her questions and had asked about the delicious desserts she was making.
“I can understand now why my brother was eager to come home as soon as his work for the day ends.”
“Of course, everyone loves good food especially if it was made with love.”
“So you love my brother?”
His brother was one of the most eligible bachelors within the capital city. Now that he was married, many women will seeth in anger and may cause trouble to his new Big Sis.
“Don’t let him hear about it or else it might go into his head.” Lu Xinyi winked at her brother in law. There was a growling sound coming from the other side of the counter and she took a look at it surprised to see her two dogs chewing on her shoes. “What the heck?!”
Sensing the dangerous mood of their owner, the two Akita dogs ran away from the fuming woman.
“Mallows! Milktea! You two come back here!” Lu Xinyi yelled as she followed her dogs.
Shen Xue shook his head, his own grin sliding onto his features. He was glad that his older brother had met a sweet and kind woman like Lu Xinyi. How did she fell in love with his brother anyway?
Speaking of his brother, Shen Xue noticed his brother’s presence as he ate the last piece of eclair on his plate. Now, why did he feel that he just stepped literally on a demon’s den?
