Chapter 837: I’ll Cut Off Your Tongue If You Dare to Make a Sound
“Your grandparents were an old couple. Their only daughter was your mother,” Yue Tingfeng said after a contemplative pause, “If we use your mother’s age as a baseline, they had her… when they were about 65. There’s no way that they would have been able to have a child at that age.”
Yan Qingsi’s eyes widened slightly. “So you’re saying that my mother… was not their flesh and blood.”
Yue Tingfeng nodded his head. “That’s right. I’ve been investigating what happened to your mother all this while, but I could only investigate up to the point where your mother came into the care of that old couple when she was about five or six. Any earlier than that though, and I can’t find anything. I wanted to clear up everything before letting you know.”
Yan Qingsi bit her lip. She was not that surprised when Yue Tingfeng told her this.
She had thought that her mother’s relationship with the You family was because of her grandparents, or maybe it was because of some other underground relationship. She had also toyed with the idea that her mother was not the birth daughter of her grandparents. With Yue Tingfeng’s proof today, however, an idea surfaced in her mind, the mystery of her mother’s birth was truly complicated.
Yan Qingsi remembered You Yi’s somber, frightening expression before he left. To understand why her mother had died, he needed to understand her birthright. He needed to find the roots of her mother.
Yan Qingsi quickly called You Yi. Perhaps this new information would be of use to him.
However, no one answered even though the call went through.
Yan Qingsi tried calling him a few times; no one picked up. She put her phone down and clutched her forehead, head bowed. “Because the mystery of my mother’s birth and death are unclear, the people who killed her have not been killed. I can’t ever find inner peace like this.”
“I’ll help you.” Yue Tingfeng pulled Yan Qingsi into an embrace. “What happened before your mother came into the Nie family can’t be unearthed, but… there’s always a clue somewhere.”
Clue… Yan Qingsi knew how important a clue was, and that ginkgo leaf necklace was the only clue. She needed to get it!
The necklace, the You family, her mother. There was a direct connection between these three entities.
Also, there was Ye Lingzhi.
She needed to get the answers about the necklace straight from Ye Lingzhi.
Yan Qingsi clasped her hand around Yue Tingfeng’s. “What should I do if I want to dig up something I want to know from someone else?”
“You exploit their weaknesses,” Yue Tingfeng answered.
“But what if all her weaknesses have already been destroyed?” Ye Lingzhi’s weaknesses were basically of no use now. Her own life and Yan Mingzhu’s life were of no use.
Yue Tingfeng shook his head. “That won’t happen. There must be something. Tell me who it is.”
“Ye Lingzhi,” Yan Qingsi said after a moment of hesitation.
“Leave it to me. I’ll handle her.”
Yan Qingsi nodded her head.
…
In the wee hours of the night, You Xi was jolted awake from the cold. He was so cold that he kept shivering. He wanted to yell for a nurse to turn up the temperature in his room when he woke up, but… a shadow sat by his side.
You Xi was so scared that he wanted to scream. “I’ll cut your tongue off if you dare to make a noise,” the shadow said in a ghastly voice before he could emit a single sound.
You Xi immediately clamped his mouth shut. He swallowed his scream.
“Un-un-un-un-uncle…” he stammered.
Despair filled You Xi. Goddammit. What was this old fox doing here again?
You Yi’s face was entirely submerged in darkness. You Xi could only make out his cold, murderous eyes.
“Right now, I will ask you questions, and you will answer,” he said. “Don’t lie to me. Don’t hide anything from me. If you can’t lie before me, don’t go asking for death!”
