Chapter 77 - "What happened? How did she go crazy just like that?" (3)
It was a long silence from the other end of the phone. So long that Pu Jianyi thought he had been disconnected.
“Rugui, did you hear what I said? I said I saw the female comrade at the station today.”
“Yeah, I’m listening.”
Having heard that, Pu Jianyi’s lips curved right away. “I knew you were still listening. Did you know what happened to that female comrade?”
Another silence from the other end of the phone. Pu Jianyi didn’t wait this time, he carried on saying, “That poor girl. She was hit by her adoptive parents’ real daughter last time and this time she was accused by her own grandmother and cousin……”
He told Wen Rugui the entire case excitedly and Wen Rugui was still on the line with him when he was done.
He took a look. It had been well over a minute by now. He was short of grinning from ear to ear. “Rugui, you know this female comrade, right? She’s so pitiful. Do you think that I should lend her a hand?
Wen Rugui frowned slightly with the receiver in his hand.
He looked through the window and at the tall, grey wall outside. A very distinct face popped into his mind.
She had a tear-like mole under the left eye, a very small one. A feature that one would not notice if one wasn’t looking carefully.
From what Pu Jianyi had told him, a fragile girl being helplessly bullied by her family appeared in his mind and somewhere inside of him felt uncomfortable.
His eyelids shuddered a little and he said nonchalantly, “Help her if it’s within your ability.”
Pu Jianyi chuckled. “Am I counting that as a favor for you?”
“Mmm.”
“I am becoming more and more curious now. What is your relationship with this girl?”
“Not related.”
“Yeah, right. You can barely tell women apart nevermind asking for help voluntarily. Be honest. Are you in a relationship?”
“No, your one minute is up.”
The phone was disconnected after that.
The tip of Pu Jianyi’s tongue pushed the back of his teeth again when he was listening to the dial tone.
There must be something going on with him. What one minute? It had been at least 5 minutes!
Remembering Tong Xuelu’s bright and big eyes, he tsked.
Had he known who she was ahead of time, he would have found a way to weasel onto the case.
What a bummer.

Jie Jinhua and the others returned to the compound.
Sun Guilan threw herself at Jie Jinhua as soon as she had regained consciousness. “Mom, please help Yanliang. You are the only one who can help him!”
She did not believe one bit that her mother-in-law had gone insane!
Her mother-in-law was perfectly fine before going to the police station. It was not possible that she lost her mind just like that!
Tong Erzhu, too, looked like he was about to cry. “Mom, you raised Yanliang too. His life will be over if he’s been to prison!”
Feng Zhaodi looked at her mother-in-law intensely, trying to see if she could find any signs.
Jie Jinhua, however, drooled and smiled foolishly as though she had really gone insane.
Jie Jinhua was not happy about it either.
She wanted to save her grandson as well but, if she said she was not crazy, the cops would hold her accountable for her words and she just might get a death sentence!
As such, she must continue to pretend that she was crazy no matter what.
Feng Zhaodi pulled her husband aside and asked in a low voice, “What happened? How did Mom just go crazy like that?”
Tong Sanzhuang scratched his nose and said, “They said mom committed perjury and accused a military personnel and that that will warrant a death penalty. Mom freaked out, peed herself, and said she was crazy.”
Feng Zhaodi heard “death penalty” and was startled. “How did we get to the point of death penalty? Tell me the entire thing!”
Tong Sanzhuang picked his ear and said, “I don’t remember the details anymore.”
Each cop was meaner than the previous one. He dared not even breathe too loudly once he was in there. Then there was the very formal way that they talked. There was no way he could repeat them.
Feng Zhaodi smacked him viciously. “How useless are you? Can even remember something so simple. I should have been the one who went had I known!”
