“Rick, what do you think you’re doing?”
“I’m merely doing what Huo Mian asked me to.”
“Let me go, I have to go rescue her.”
“No need to worry, I’ll help you rescue her.”
“Rick, you don’t understand. As long as Huo Siqian is alive, he will stop all our attempts in rescuing Mian.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll get Huo Mian out, even if it means risking my own life. This is a promise I’m making to you because you’re my friend.”
Qin Chu looked down and didn’t say anything else. He knew Rick was as stubborn as an ox and would not easily change his mind once he had committed.
“I have something else to tell you.”
Qin Chu slowly lifted his head and asked, “What?”
“She’s here.”
“Who?” Qin Chu didn’t quite catch on.
“Lu Yan.”
“She actually…?” Qin Chu never thought that Mian’s little sister would show up.
“When did she enter the country?”
“Yesterday. As soon as she crossed the border, she’s been a target of assassinations without a single moment of breathing room. It looks like Huo Siqian knows she is here as well, so he’s been creating trouble for her to ensure she stays busy.”
Qin Chu fell into silence again upon hearing what Rick said.
“What I mean is, it’s not just you. A lot of people are trying to save Huo Mian. Lu Yan, Su Yu, and I are all trying to help her. Please just trust us.”
“It’s not that I don’t trust you, Rick. I just…” Before Qin Chu could finish, Rick continued, “I’ve made arrangements to have you sent to the U.S tomorrow night. You have to go first, this is what Huo Mian wanted. Once I get Huo Mian out, I will have her meet you in the U.S.”
“No, I’m not going.”
“You have to, you have no other choice.” Rick then stood up and left the room.
“Rick!” Qin Chu yelled after him. But regardless of how loud he yelled, Rick had made up his mind, and he wasn’t about to change it.
After Rick left, Qin Chu began contemplating everything that had happened over the past couple of days.
His father was still unconscious, ever since his surgery. Even though he was no longer in critical condition, he still needed around-the-clock care. Thus, his family was going to the U.S with him, so he could receive treatment.
His mother, on the other hand, revealed something that was very surprising to Qin Chu when no one was around – Huo Mian was pregnant.
But then, upon hearing what had happened, Qin Chu became rather calm and was able to process the situation clearly. Huo Mian probably told a white lie to secure his dad’s condition. After all, being pregnant was big news. Huo Mian would definitely have mentioned it to him, if not, at least to her best friends, Jiang Xiaowei and Zhu Lingling.
Most importantly, prisoners were required to do a thorough check-up before imprisonment. If Huo Mian was really pregnant, she would never receive the death penalty.
Since the death sentence was announced a while ago, Qin Chu automatically assumed the pregnancy was a lie.
But of course, he wouldn’t know he was wrong, because Huo Mian herself didn’t even know she was pregnant.
At this time, Huo Mian was sitting quietly in her prison cell. Her period was ten days late; although this had never happened before, under such circumstances she didn’t seem to be too surprised.
As a doctor, she self-diagnosed that her hormones were out of whack because of all that she had been through. She didn’t even consider the idea that she might be pregnant. After all, she was in a very stressful situation the last time she saw Qin Chu. Not only that, they had only done it once since then.
“Huo Mian, have some fruit.” The female guard brought out a fruit platter as the other female inmates watched enviously from their cells.
She gets fruit? What kind of treatment is this?
Two female inmates began discussing immediately.
“Do you know who is in that cell? Why does she get treated so well? Not only does she get four dishes and a bowl of soup every meal, she also gets fruit! Who is she?”
