It was still Simon, and judging by how persistent he was, he probably had something important to say
to Ian.
Cindy turned to look at Ian, who was clutching his phone with a frown.
In a show of what she could only presume was assertion and defiance, he rejected the call once more.
However, just as expected, the phone rang again several seconds later and it was still Simon on the
other line.
Ian was prepared to take the call now that it was the third one. Knowing how pesky Simon could get, he
wouldn’t stop calling until someone had answered the phone.
However, Cindy beat Ian to it as she grabbed his phone and decisively said, “I’ll take it for you.”
He didn’t stop her, which probably meant he was acceding to this proposal, so she picked up the phone
and swiped to answer it. Without waiting for Simon to speak, she said, “Hello?”
Simon had only just begun to say Ian’s name when he was stunned to hear Cindy’s voice greeting him
instead. The rest of his words died on his tongue after that.
Pretending not to have heard anything, Cindy pressed again, “Hello, who’s this?”
After a few seconds of silence, Simon finally asked, “Where’s Ian?”
“Who are you? He’s busy at the moment, so why don’t you leave a message if it’s that important? I’ll
pass it on to him later,” Cindy demanded huffily, not at all patient enough to deal with his question.
Simon wasn’t sure whether Ian was indeed busy or if he simply didn’t want to entertain him at all. He
was quiet with thought for a minute before saying reluctantly, “Then, have him call me back once he’s
done being busy. I have something to talk to him about.”
Cindy hummed in response to show that she had agreed to do just that, then hung up the phone, but
not before hearing a woman’s voice in Simon’s background. The woman was probably going to ask
Simon about the phone call, but he had ended the call so quickly that Cindy only managed to catch the
beginning of what the woman had been about to say.
She couldn’t be sure if Leah was the woman in question, but she returned the phone to Ian
nonetheless and said, “Sounds like he really needs to talk to you.”
Ian scoffed. “The only thing they really want to talk to me about is money.” The rumors surrounding the
will had yet to blow over and Leah and her children would likely try to make their case on the matter.
Presently, Cindy and Ian sat down at the dining table and started on their meals, but they had barely
taken a few bites when his phone rang again.
Thinking that it was yet another one of Simon’s calls, Cindy frowned and said in irritation, “My
goodness, doesn’t he know when to stop?”
Ian was equally annoyed. “At this rate, I might have to ask the attorney to tell him to stop harassing us.”
As he said this, he reached for his phone, only to be astonished when he saw the caller ID.
At the sight of this, she knew that something was off and asked bluntly, “Is it Simon again?”
“Hmm.” Ian looked grim and replied, “No, it’s Yulia.”
Cindy paused in a shock. “Yulia? What does she want now?”
Frankly speaking, he was just as clueless, not to mention surprised.
“Just answer it,” she allowed as she cast a baleful look at his phone. “Put it on speaker so I can hear
what she has to say, though.”
He nodded and picked up the call, then put in on speaker like Cindy told him to before setting his
phone down on the table between them.
Yulia was the first to speak, and there was lighthearted humor in her voice as she greeted, “Ian?”
After humming, he asked impassively, “What is it? Is there something important you want to talk
about?”
As though ignoring his reserved tone, she continued with a small laugh, “I was just thinking about what
a coincidence it was to run into you when I went over to the set earlier. I was actually there to see a
friend to go over some work stuff.”
Cindy quirked her lips unhappily when she heard this. For some reason, she did not believe Yulia at all.
Call it paranoia, but I highly doubt that she had no idea Ian was going to be at the set today.
Ian, on the other hand, didn’t inquire more into the truth of this statement as he answered, “Oh.” He
added nothing more to the conversation.
Perhaps Yulia was beginning to feel awkward, but her voice took on a good-humored edge as she
elaborated, “You know, that executive director from the show is an old friend of mine and he’s in charge
of several other shows as well. His words do carry weight in the industry, not to mention the prime
resources he has on hand.”
It was enough to make him instantly grow defensive. She was always going on about capital and
resources like they mattered to him, but the truth couldn’t be further from that, for he was never the
slightest bit interested in what she had to offer.
