After hearing about the condition at the funeral, Cindy asked, “Should I be there? If so, I can go there
right now.”
She feared that some media might take photos there. If they realized she wasn’t by Ian’s side, no
matter how reasonable it was, someone might make nonsensical rumors out of it. Now that Ian had
finally redeemed his reputation, Cindy didn’t want those unethical journalists to ruin it again.
“It’s okay. Just stay at home,” Ian stated. “There are too many people here. I did see some media
people, but I don’t think they’re targeting me; their target is the old man.”
This was Bryce’s funeral, after all. Most of them just wanted to see how grand the funeral was, and
some were just waiting for something to happen between the Morgans at the funeral.
The media always loved some hot news and scoops, and they might even want to see a fight break out
at Bryce’s funeral so that they could talk about it.
If Cindy came over, Ian wasn’t sure that he would have time to look after her. She understood as well,
so she nodded. “Take care and don’t forget to eat. The Morgans are great in number, so you don’t have
to be present all the time. If you really can’t take it anymore, just find a place to rest.”
Ian smiled. “Ok, got it. I’m an adult; I know what to do, so don’t worry. I got everything under control.”
With that, Ian hung up and walked back to his post. The guests truly had decreased around noon, and
Sean could take some time off as well.
Ian stood outside the casket site and peered in. Leah had found a seat, whereas Simon and Sally were
still standing near the casket. Sally’s sorrow must have been real. There were no guests present, but
she was still wiping her tears.
Simon didn’t look particularly different, save for his unusually low spirits.
Leah sat on the chair, silent with her head lowered. Ian sighed, then moved away. He had no words for
the three of them. He didn’t want to pick a fight with them, but he refused to comfort them either.
Sean walked over after a while and said to Ian, “You must be tired. Find someplace to rest first. There’s
another crowd coming in the afternoon.”
Ian leaned against a tree. “So many people came, but I wonder how many are truly saddened by the
news. I feel like they’re all here for the sake of being here.”
Sean retrieved a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and gave Ian one. He lit his own cigarette, then
tossed the lighter to his brother. “It’s like this everywhere. Real relationships don’t exist in this society.
Everyone’s just going to places they should be at. You’re not in the business field, so you haven’t seen
as much as I did. If you’ve witnessed the utter pretense in the business field, you’d say that the guests
today were behaving quite well, regardless.”
Ian chuckled. “You did a great job tackling those people for many years.”
Sean seemed forlorn as he held the cigarette in his mouth. “I was thinking last night, what have I
worked all these years for? If I managed to get all the property, what would happen then? I’d just be
following in Dad’s footsteps and destroying my own health. Is it really worth all the effort?”
Ian raised an eyebrow and said to Sean, “Why, do you have other plans in mind?”
Sean let out a long breath. “My mind is in a mess right now, so I can’t say for sure. When everything is
over, I’ll think long and hard about it and decide how to live for the rest of my days.”
From a young age, Sean had always been concerned with the Morgans’ company. Aside from the
company, he couldn’t get motivated enough to do anything else, so his own life was a mess. Sean
himself knew very well that he was starting to have these thoughts exactly because he had achieved
everything he was going for in the first place.
Ian cast a meaningful look at the casket site. “I wonder what those three might be up to. The old man is
gone now, so they won’t have much to be wary of anymore. Just do as you see fit; I’ll be leaving after
the funeral anyway.”
