As Logan talked about bringing Lola to the clubhouse, he rose from his seat and rushed out the door.
Along the way, he added, “I don’t trust anyone else to drop her off here. I’ll have to drive her myself.” It
was obvious that he was a man who worshiped the ground his wife walked on, judging from how similar
his behavior was to John’s the other day.
When the door closed behind him, Ian and Cindy were once again left on their own.
She dipped her head to take a few more bites of food, but when she sensed Ian’s amused gaze
lingering on her, she slammed her utensils down on the table. “Can’t you just eat your food or go play
another round of that stupid game? Stop staring at me!”
Ian pressed his lips to keep himself from laughing. She’s getting sassier every day. He remembered a
time when Cindy had been so easily intimidated that one look from him was all it took to shut her up;
back in those days, she would never have retaliated against him with such vigor.
Since when did all of that change? Look at her now, talking back to me.
He left the gaming machine and crossed over to the dining table, deliberately choosing a seat close to
her without trying to irk her any further.
Without taking up his utensils, he merely leaned back into his chair and crossed his arms, eyeing Cindy
steadily as he asked, “What were you and Logan talking about upstairs earlier?”
Freezing for a split second, she indeed didn’t think Ian would bring this up again, but she answered
innocently, “Nothing. He was just showing me the projection device, that’s all.”
Ian smirked. “Think twice before lying to me. You know I can needle Logan into telling me the truth.”
She put her utensils down slowly and countered, “What do you think we were talking about, then?”
Frankly, Ian had no idea what Cindy and Logan could possibly have to talk about that would result in
their unreadable expressions when they came downstairs just now. However, he was sure that they
must have gone through some somber topic, and chances were that they had been talking about him,
Blinking thoughtfully, Ian kept his eyes on Cindy for a few more minutes before pointing out, “I hope
that you could come to me with any questions you might have.”
She pressed her lips into a thin line and took up her utensils again, then resumed her meal. “I don’t
have any questions for you.”
More like I don’t have the right to ask you anything about your relationship with Sophia, she thought
begrudgingly to herself. As things were, she meant nothing to Ian, much less Sophia. If they had been
madly in love before this, Cindy was the last person to have anything to do with them.
The smile on Ian’s face began to slip when he heard this, but instead of growing angry, he kept his
temper in check. Cindy was no longer as indulgent toward him as she had been, and she wouldn’t let
him have his way just because he was furious.
After Logan had left, Cindy and Ian didn’t have much of the food, and they asked that the kitchen hold
on to the rest of the dishes while they waited.
It didn’t take long for Logan to return to the clubhouse, and he brought Lola over with plenty of time to
spare. Although Lola was very much pregnant, she looked to be in good spirits as she beamed and
said, “So, I hear we’re playing a round of poker.”
Ian turned in his seat to give her a look of mock disapproval. “I can’t believe you picked up your
husband’s worst habit.”
She laughed good-naturedly. “Well, you know how bad habits can be infectious, don’t you?”
Since neither she nor Logan had had any food, she sat down and joined in the meal.
Logan had the kitchen send up several more dishes. Soon, the table was filled with laughter and
pleasantries. An hour later, they switched to another private room and immediately settled down around
the poker table.
One might assume that Lola wouldn’t be comfortable sitting at the poker table while pregnant, but she
appeared to be at ease as she went about dealing cards.
Much like how she was with video games, Cindy was a novice when it came to poker as well. In other
words, she was completely hopeless when it came to fun and games.
She could barely get through video games without becoming the laughingstock for everyone else, and
with strategic games like poker, she had as good as lost before the game even started. Sure enough,
she didn’t win in any of the rounds.
Sitting across from her, Ian didn’t once look up to see how she was doing. He was focused on his own
cards. While Cindy had been calm during the start of the game, she was growing nervous after seeing
Ian take the winnings for two consecutive rounds. She couldn’t even help the cold sweat that broke out
over her palms.
The more cautious she was, the more her expression cracked. Ian could practically guess her hand
right away. She gritted her teeth and wished she could win the next round just to nurse her pride.
Alas, one couldn’t become a card shark just by will and prayers. At some point, even Logan found it a
little difficult to breathe through the tension. “Hey, Ian, think you could lay off the intimidation for a bit?
Your girlfriend’s half scared to death!”
