Chapter 1655: I have seen this portrait before.
The memory of the person in the traditional clothes of a minority ethnic group was clear in their minds.
To He Yun’s disappointment, the person being sketched looked too ordinary. The only thing worthy of notice was the light in his eyes.
It was a boundless darkness which sparked something in his mind, as though he had seen it somewhere before.
“What’s wrong?”
The sketch artist looked at him in confusion, thinking that he was not satisfied with the portrait. Hence, he asked again. “Mr. He, this portrait…”
“I have seen this portrait before.”
He Yun stared at the portrait with a frown. The man’s eyes were familiar, as though he had met him when he was young.
“You have seen it before?”
The sketch artist looked at him. Did this mean that he would get a big credit for this case this time?
He Yun gave his boss a call. As expected, he received a frigid response from the latter since he did not manage to identify the actual culprit. The few small-fries caught were not worth mentioning.
Seeing that Ji Ziming’s aura had turned a few notches colder after hanging up the call, Pei Ge held her company’s confidential data and asked, “Take a look at this document. Is there anything missing?”
The man received it and stared at the numbers listed on it with a frown. Light flashed in his eyes.
“These figures are wrong.”
He reached this conclusion after staring at it for a while. More accurately, it was the conclusion Pei Ge arrived at five minutes ago.
“No, these figures are right, but they’ve been tampered with. This file was given to me by Ji Miao, so she must’ve tampered with it herself. She was afraid that she would reveal all my company’s secrets. This is the second half of the documents, and it’s inaccurate, so the other person who has the first half must’ve received an inaccurate copy, too.”
She was very certain and willing to trust all her employees.
“You’re… sure?”
He cocked an eyebrow. Looked like it’s Ji Miao’s win this time.
“I’m sure. I’m more familiar with the figures than anyone else, for it’s me and my secretary who put everything together after a lot of effort. If this gets taken, my company will be reduced to a shell.”
“I know. Looks like this that lady wasn’t stupid.”
Although his voice was cool, it was warmer than usual.
“She did it for me.”
Pei Ge’s voice turned into a whimper again.
“It’s fine. It’s all over.”
Before he could finish consoling her, the handphone rang again.
“Sir, Mr. Qu has regained consciousness.”
When the couple rushed to the hospital, Qu Xiujie was sitting on his bed and eating with chopsticks in his hands. He did not look like a person who had been in an accident, and his eyes even shone when he saw Pei Ge walk in.
His voice was even more affectionate like an elder as he patted the area beside him and said, “Pei Ge, come over. Sit here.”
However, when he spotted Ji Ziming following behind her, his attitude turned cold and he patted the chair beside him. “Young Master Ji is here, too. Hurry and come sit here.”
“Mr. Qu is truly biased. My wife sits beside you while I sit in this chair?”
Ji Ziming’s eyes were cold as his smile deepened. He looked at the man with a menacing aura.
“You truly like to joke around. I just saw madam enter, and it seems cold, so I asked her to sit beside me.”
He found himself a somewhat legitimate reason, but to the man, it still seemed forced.
“Your reason is a bit low-class. Does it mean that I am incomparable to my wife in your heart, or do you totally not care about your safety?”
The latter’s lips involuntarily curled upward. Pei Ge, who was standing beside him, could see from the coldness in his eyes that he was nearing his limits. In this state, his expression only changed subtly.
“You truly like pulling my leg. Of course, I cherish my life. It’s just that I only woke up a short while ago. I heard from the nurse that I had been asleep for some time. It must be that my brain hadn’t started functioning yet after sleeping for so long.”
Qu Xiujie chuckled, then ate another bite of his food as he said in a muffled voice, “Don’t just stand there, guys. You’re all so tall, so isn’t a lonely old man like me getting looked down on by you two.”
The bodyguard behind pulled two chairs over, and Ji Ziming pulled Pei Ge over to sit down next to him. Looking at the man sitting on the bed, he chuckled. “Is Mr. Qu still satisfied with my hospital? Is it to your liking?”
“Of course; of course, it is! Who doesn’t know that your Ji family’s hospital has the best service, best team, and even the tastiest food a hospital can offer?”
“The food you’re having now came from the Ji family’s hotel,” stated Ji Ziming coldly, blowing away all chances Qu Xiujie had to bootlick.
A hint of awkwardness flashed across the latter’s face. It was clear that this man would not take a hint of hypocrisy from him. He then took another mouthful of food and chewed it for some time before continuing. “Can you have your men leave? I’m the only one eating here, and the whole room is filled with the smell of delicious food. I’m afraid that they won’t be able to hold themselves back.”
“They won’t. You can have your meal at ease.”
Ji Ziming pondered on it for a while. His bodyguards would not be enticed by food this quickly. Of course, their appetite was not something Qu Xiujie could compare to.
“Fine, then. I will continue eating my food.”
Seeing that the man was unfazed, Qu Xiujie decided to gobble up his food fast. He then took a piece of tissue from the bedside table before burping in satisfaction. His eyes then darted between the couple.
His voice was back to how it was when he spoke to Ji Ziming before. “Young Master Ji, you don’t need to watch me this closely, do you? I am now a patient and can’t do anything to madam.”
He had a strong urge to tease the young chap when he saw how protective the latter was of the woman.
“My wife is just here. If you want to do anything to her, we will see if you have the guts or if you can reach her before my men at the door catch you.”
The man’s lips curled upward involuntarily. The smile in his eyes made the other’s heart quiver.
“You truly like pulling my leg. I’m just a handicapped person, so how can I fight your men? Aren’t you just humiliating me?”
