Driven Mad by Envy
Blake was able to give a confident and eloquent speech only because she had prepared her excuse
before the visit. Alec indeed suffered from mental health issues before, and as long as that was
undisputed, her arguments would stand.
Alec understood her explanation. Before the memory loss, he had noticed an odd development in his
obsession with Jenny, which was why he had sought her help to prevent things from getting out of
hand. The memory loss that came after was an unexpected development.
“I do not intend to argue on the details, but I’d like to make it clear that our relationship is strictly
business. I have no interest in you, and you shouldn’t have any feelings for me.” He gave her a cold
glance. No matter how Blake explained herself, he couldn’t bring himself to like her. Still, he needed to
keep her around because he had to rely on the Watkins’ support.
His words didn’t anger Blake. She’d take anything as long as he didn’t suggest a breakup. ’Okay. I got
it. Our goal is to create a win-win situation, and I’m clear on that. You should have lunch now. We can
discuss it later.’ She smiled at him and dropped the conversation.
In the next few days, Jenny and Alec did not meet up even though they were both in the hospital. They
seemed to avoid seeing each other as though they were strangers.
A week later, Alec was discharged from the hospital, and Graham made a full recovery. However,
Graham appeared slightly lethargic after his injuries, perhaps due to his old age.
“Alec, the other families visited Mr. Walter when he was in the hospital. Should we visit him too?’ Blake
casually suggested while she packed Alec’s stuff. He went up to her to yank his belongings from her
and said, ’Sure.”
“Great. Let’s visit Mr. Walter before we get the paperwork done.” Blake wasn’t furious even though Alec
made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with her.
He nodded, and the two left for Graham’s room a floor above.
Graham was discharged on the same day as Alec. Jenny had processed the paperwork early in the
morning and was ready to leave with Graham. Therefore, she looked rather taken aback when Alec
and Blake showed up.
“Mr. Walter and Miss Walter, we’re so sorry for visiting you at this time. Alec’s health has recently
improved. That’s why we had to pay you a late visit.” Blake began with an apology.
“Miss Watkins, how nice of you,’ Graham exchanged pleasantries, but he had no opinion of Alec and
Blake. His attention lingered a little longer on Alec simply because he was Jenny’s ex-husband, but that
was all to it.
Alec made small talk with Graham but couldn’t help stealing glances at Jenny. She seemed to have lost
weight during his absence and showed signs of tiredness, presumably from acting as Graham’s
caretaker. He was worried about her but did not vocalize his concern.
Sensing his gaze, she tilted her head to look at him and met his eyes. She froze but quickly smiled and
nodded at him. He was pained by the awkwardness between them.
“Mr. Walter, since you’re discharged, we will not take up your time. I’ll need to get the paperwork done
for Alec too.” Blake planned to leave after a quick chat with Graham.
She had noticed the interaction between Alec and Jenny and was driven mad by envy. As she had
feared, Alec only had eyes for Jenny once he regained his memories.
