The Past Doesn’t Matter Now
Alec’s frustrations were put to rest with a nice cup of coffee sliding down his stomach.
“Talk.”
Jenny nodded and straightened her back. She stared straight into Alec’s eyes when she said, “You’ve
lost your memories, haven’t you?”
Alec’s eyebrows raised, and anger flashed in his eyes.
“I’ve called Grandpa and Paul. I’ve deduced from their words that you have indeed lost your
memories,” Jenny continued before he could speak. She stared at him, attempting to detect any
changes in his expression.
Surprisingly, he remained calm.
There was silence.
A few moments later, Jenny broke the silence. “Why aren’t you answering my question?”
“I think you’re hilarious. I don’t know what to say,” Alec sneered, his tone full of sarcasm. He leaned
forward, placing his weight on the table. “Losing my memories? Have you watched too many movies,
or are you just braindead? Why are you telling such jokes?”
“Jokes?” Jenny asked. Alec’s reaction was making her even more certain of it. “I thought it was
hilarious, too, when I came to this conclusion. In fact, I couldn’t quite believe it. But then I thought about
it and can now confirm that you have lost your memories. That’s why you haven’t returned to
Parrington. You’re afraid of your grandfather finding out. You don’t want to keep in touch with the
people from your past because you’re afraid of being found out.”
Alec was avoiding even her.
Alec was still silent. He wanted to keep things vague, but Jenny was not giving him a chance. “If you
haven’t lost your memories, you’ll be able to tell me where we first met and what happened on that
day.”
She knew that even if Alec had researched his past, he would not find out something as small as that.
He wouldn’t know the answer if he lost his memories.
Alec’s eyebrows were furrowed. He was a little angry. “Why should I prove anything to you? Who do
you think I am?”
“I don’t need you to prove anything to me because I’ve already confirmed it. ” Jenny wasn’t surprised
that Alec wouldn’t give her a straight answer. She already knew it.
She took a deep breath and organized her thoughts before speaking again. “I didn’t come looking for
you to prove anything. I just wanted to tell you the truth. You’ve lost your memories, so you believe
everything that Blake tells you. You think that your feelings for me were just a psychological issue. But
is that really so? To be honest, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you can’t be deceived by that
woman. She said those things to you when you had amnesia-”
“Are you done?” Before Jenny could finish, Alec cut her off with a sneer.” Do you just mean to say that I
really liked you? And that it’s not because of a mental problem?”
“I just want-”
“It doesn’t matter if I really liked you. What’s important is that I really, really do not like you right now.”
Especially when he was trying so hard not to let anyone find out about his amnesia. Yet, Jenny had
exposed his secrets. He wasn’t happy.
Jenny instantly swallowed all the words she wanted to say. She looked at Alec, believing that what he
said was true.
A moment later, she laughed. “That’s right. Whatever happened in the past doesn’t matter anymore.”
Alec didn’t care about whether he liked her or not.
