“Duncan,” said Mrs. Lewis.
She asked Liberty to come and take care of her son.
Mrs. Lewis felt bad now that Liberty was left standing outside.
Duncan closed his eyes, refusing to talk.
There was nothing Mrs. Lewis could do about it.
The cold sweat dripping from her son’s forehead gave Mrs. Lewis great distress.
She grabbed a tissue and dabbed the sweat off her son.
“I know that you still have feelings for Liberty, Duncan. Why do this to yourself?” Duncan kept his eyes
closed and his mouth shut.
He was more upset than anyone else to leave Liberty out in the cold, and the heartache was hard to
bear.
Still, Duncan did not want Liberty to see him like this.
Liberty did not fall in love with him when he was in the best health.
There were lesser chances of Liberty ever falling for him now that he was crippled.
The only feelings he would get from her were pity.
Seeing that her son was not in the mood to talk, Mrs. Lewis did not pursue the subject further.
After a brief silence, Mrs. Lewis rose to her feet and went out.
She gently opened the door and saw Liberty standing outside.
“Is Mr. Duncan alright, Mrs. Lewis?” Liberty had overheard all the fuss in the ward from outside.
Mrs. Lewis then shut the door to the ward and pulled Liberty to sit on a chair.
She sighed and said, “Don’t take it to heart, Liberty.He's...He’s okay.He fell from the bed, and we
carried him back up.” Sigh! Duncan’s legs must hurt even more to fall from bed with that injury.
Liberty’s heart went out to Duncan just thinking about what had happened.
“I want to go in there and see him, Mrs. Lewis.” Mrs. Lewis pulled Liberty back.
“He doesn’t want to see you.He will get worked up and fall out of bed again if you go in there.” With
resolution in her eyes, Liberty said, “Ill break his fall if he drops from his bed.” Mrs. Lewis loosened her
grip over Liberty’s arm.
Liberty took strides to the entrance of the ward with the food container in hand, but two bodyguards
were quick to put their arms out to stop her.
Caught between a rock and a hard place, one of the bodyguards uttered, “Ms. Liberty, Mr. Duncan
doesn’t want to see you.
Please leave.” “Get out of the way.” Mrs. Lewis approached and jostled the bodyguards out of the way.
The bodyguards were not in the position to get physical with Mrs. Lewis and faked a resistance so
Liberty could get into the ward.
Seeing that Liberty made it into the room, Derek opened his mouth but said nothing in the end.
He quietly walked out of the ward.
In bed, Duncan’s eyes were closed, but he was not asleep.
He used sleep as an excuse to avoid his parents as the last thing he wanted was to see their
heartbreak.
Liberty had seen Duncan on the day of the accident, but Duncan had refused to meet since learning
about his injury.
It had been ten days since she saw him.
Duncan lay in bed, pale in the face and breaking out in cold sweat.
He had lost a lot of weight too, and his face was unshaven and unkempt.
Duncan was now a different person than the CEO with the swagger he once was.
Liberty quietly drew close and put the food container on the bedside table.
She then sat by the bed and pulled out a tissue to wipe away Duncan’s sweat.
Duncan abruptly opened his eyes.
He caught a whiff of a different scent.
Duncan looked at Liberty, who sat by the bed with a tissue in hand.
With him opening his eyes, Liberty froze from trying to clear his sweat away.
