Hailey also realized that she had been overreaching-this was Jay’s group, and she had no cause to
throw her weight around.
Hailey could not help snapping at Zoe given how she was behaving and was surprised that Jay took
exception.
As such, Hailey came up with an excuse to leave.
On the other hand, it was still awkward for Zoe, since Jay did hang her out to dry.
He never snapped at people, but his impassive expression could leave one feeling nonexistent.
Soon, the first rehearsal was over.
Jay did not say much and dismissed everyone for a break before turning toward Zoe. ’Come with me.”
Everyone was throwing Zoe looks of pity right then, and she certainly pitied herself as well.
But there was no one out there to save her!
She steeled herself as she followed Jay into his VIP lounge, hanging her head as she stood there
respectfully like a kid caught doing something naughty.
She did not mind appearing pitiful if that could buy her a little sympathy from Jay-when one lived long
enough, they would realize that dignity was not that important.
“Not sober yet?” Jay asked her, straight to the point.
“I’m sober but sleepy,” Zoe admitted.
At this point, she would rather give up than lie or come up with excuses one lie would inevitably lead to
another, and it was actually exhausting.
“Have you had breakfast?” Jay then asked.
Zoe was left speechless-were they not straying out of topic?
Jay suddenly whipped out his phone and made a call.
To be precise, he was ordering breakfast delivery.
‘Breakfast? It’s almost noon, sir…’
However, Zoe did not argue since she still had no idea what Jay was up to.
The silence between them was eerie, as Jay said nothing else after hanging up.
It was like the calm before the storm, and Zoe simply stood woodenly before him, afraid to speak, until
they heard a knock on the door.
Jay leaned on his cane and rose to his feet.
His movement was not clumsy, but the limp was obvious.
What injury was it that he still has not healed?
But to be fair, tendons and bones took a long time to heal.
Zoe did not dwell on it, when Jay put the ordered breakfast on the table in front of himself, while telling
her, “Eat.”
Zoe stared at him, uncertain-was he really talking to her?
“There’s just us here.” Jay sighed. “If you were that obedient when you were a child, your grades
wouldn’t have been that poor and your parents wouldn’t have scolded you as much.”
“They aren’t my parents,” Zoe corrected him with a really calm tone—she was just stating a fact, after
all.
Still, after a pause, she added flatly, “Hold on, that’s not quite right. The man is my father, but since he
refuses to acknowledge me, let’s just pretend he isn’t.”
“Eat,” Jay repeated, beckoning at her calmly while ignoring the subject.
“Thank you.”
Zoe did not hold back-she would rather die than go hungry.
Her taste buds were tingling just after a few spoonfuls of chowder as well- it must have been centuries
since she had anything from that restaurant.
She remembered how she always sent Penny, her assistant, to buy it for her during better days… but
this was no time to mention the better days, and she would not waste anything for a meal that was so
hard to come by.
Naturally, she would not eat too much either-stars were supposed to maintain a perfect figure, and
even if she was not the type who gained weight easily, she was not the type who never got fat. That
was why she would not finish it like other stars would.
When she was finished, she quietly put down her spoon.
“You done?” Jay asked.
“Yeah.”
