Chapter 499
In fact, Cordy herself had been wary of Jessica.
She had been rather uneasy after the two months of peace, worried that Jessica
would strike at her out of the blue.
Patrick’s take naturally afforded her some relief-she was at least safe before Jessica
got married.
With that, Cordy didn’t drag on her conversation with Patrick. They soon hung up,
since he was a busy man.
Cordy hesitated for a moment in her office. Then, she headed to the detention center
with the four bodyguards Patrick arranged for her.
John was visibly skinnier in his prison uniform and bald haircut.
In fact, he had been losing weight every day since he was arrested.
Even if he was smiling every time she came to visit, it wasn’t that hard to tell that he
wasn’t doing well.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he said feebly. ‘I know I look hideous right now.”
He was certainly a lot less bright and glamorous than when he was the scion of the
Levines.
Cordy averted her eyes-he wasn’t hideous to her, but it hurt to see how skinny he
was.
She remembered that he had gastric issues, and it wasn’t relapsing because he had
been keeping himself healthy.
He would suffer agonizing pain if he didn’t.
Didn’t he regret it, knowing that he would suffer like this?
“Your grandfather’s liquidating the family’s estates,” Cordy told him.
“I know,” John replied. “I’ve spoken to my grandfather before I was arrested -success
draws too much attention, and liquidating the family estates is the best way to
maintain our family’s legacy. When we have nothing, nobody will care about us.”
“Don’t you think that’s a shame?” Cordy asked.
Despite what he said, that was a lot of assets and a remarkable legacy. Yet, they were
going to lose it just like that?
“Having money is enough, and we’ve relished our time in the limelight.” John seemed
indifferent.
Even Alan wasn’t this relieved that he was finally letting go.
Perhaps since John wasn’t the one who built this legacy, he wasn’t hurt by the
liquidation.
“How’s your trial coming along?” Cordy couldn’t resist asking.
“It’s going well,’ John said. “Just received the court summons on the 27th, which
means I have twelve days.”
“Don’t lie to me, John,” Cordy said.
Her heart skipped a beat, as she was suddenly afraid to face the outcome of the trial
because she lacked confidence.
She had no idea how confident John was, either. What if it was game over for
everyone?
“I’d never dare,” John said humbly.
“I’m being serious.”
“Don’t worry,” John assured her. “If I’m really locked up for the rest of my life, I’ll let
you marry someone else.”
When Cordy said nothing, he said, “I’m just kidding. You’re not married to me—”
“I’ll marry you if you can get out unharmed,” Cordy suddenly said.
John stared numbly at her, stunned.
His happiness came out of the blue, leaving him not quite able to react in time.
“I always keep my promises,” Cordy said clearly.
“Okay.”
There was a quiver in John’s voice, perhaps out of excitement.
“By the way…” Cordy quickly changed the subject, since flirting was a little
inappropriate given their surroundings.
“Yes?”
“Jessica’s marrying Fred Cranston, the third son of the richest family in the nation.”
“Really?” John raised a brow, but was otherwise uninterested.
“Aren’t you surprised?”
“Not at all,’ John replied. “The Stuarts need power and money to support their cause,
and there aren’t that many dynasties in the country they’d be interested in. There’s
someone who would arrange to marry Jessica off, one way or another.”
Cordy asked, “Don’t you feel like you owe her at all?”
