Chapter 402
Cordy and John’s eyes met.
There seemed to be unspoken emotions in their gazes, yet at the same time, there
seemed to be nothing.
Silence ensued between them until Jessica spoke up,” Patrick, my dear cousin-a
shame that you beat me to a partnership with Cordy!”
“Is that so?” Patrick replied, cordial as ever with Jesscia.
“I’ve been saying that I’d like to partner with her, but never did have the chance,”
Jessica said, appearing genuinely disappointed. “On the other hand, you seemed to
really hit it off with her! It’s left me really upset for a while.”
“Now, now—you shouldn’t overreach, Jessica. Mr. Levine there leads a lot of people
and multiple elite businesses. I’m just a startup, so don’t snuff me out so soon now,”
Patrick said, seemingly jokingly as he jibed Jessica’s family for their greed.
“Come on. We’re family, aren’t we? What’s mine is yours. You have my best wishes in
your partnership with Cordy- Johnny, here. Let’s drink to their success,” Jessica said.
She had her hand intimately wrapped around John’s arm, and tugged on John
deliberately when she was offering a toast, as if to endear herself to him.
Cordy watched coolly, as John didn’t raise his glass or refuse.
He didn’t raise his glass to drink when Jessica told him to either, which left things
looking a little awkward.
Patrick quickly smoothed things over. “You might not be aware, Mr. Levine, but Miss
Sachs won’t be able to drink for the next couple days…for health reasons.”
John looked sharply at him then, but Patrick pretended not to notice as he continued,
“So, in this case, we can skip the toast-we’re family anyway, so there’s no need to get
so formal. You’re the main event as well, and there’s more guests to mingle with. Don’t
worry about us. We’re family, after all. We can handle ourselves from here.”
“In that case, we shall oblige,” Jessica smiled. “Please, enjoy the ball. John and I shall
be going now.”
“Alright. Scoot.”
And with that, Jessica tugged on John’s arm, gesturing for him to leave.
Even so, John’s eyes were glued to Cordy, who looked so naturally beautiful standing
at Patrick’s side.
“Johnny,” Jessica reminded him softly, “your grandfather and mine are right over
there.”
John gulped, but ultimately left with her without saying a word.
Once they were gone, Patrick sighed. “Shame.”
Cordy took a sip of her glass of water, and asked nonchalantly, “What now?”
“John not eloping with you right there and then.”
Cordy rolled her eyes at him, while Patrick shrugged. “I wanted to provoke him a little,
push him over the edge so that he storms out of the ball with you. He’d be burning
bridges with William’s side of the family while I sit back enjoying the spoils.”
“You underestimate him too much,” Cordy said bluntly.
“Well, he’s certainly more composed than I gave him credit for.” Patrick chuckled.
“Just like how you give me too much credit,” Cordy added flatly.
It was an objective statement to clarify that Patrick had overestimated her importance
to John.
“Actually, you underestimate your importance to him, Miss Sachs,” Patrick chuckled.
“If you were watching John’s hands, you’d see that he’d be crushing his own bones if
he was clenching them any harder.”
Cordy blinked, but quickly averted her eyes after a brief glance.
They had both chosen their own paths, and such was lifesympathizing with another
was simply unnecessary.
“It’s a little stuffy here. I need a breather,” Cordy said, putting down her glass and
ready to leave.
“Hold on.” Patrick stopped her. “The good part is just getting underway.”
