Ch.195 Remove blood stasis (2)
Mu Mingtang had seen how inconstant human affection can be, and knew well how fragile people's hearts were, so don't put human nature to the test. Mu Mingtang could bribe the Imperial Physician Zhang with some gold and silver, and ask him to treat Xie Xuanchen in secret, but Mu Mingtang didn't dare to try this out on such a huge matter like finding out what the spices actually were.
If Imperial Physician Zhang suddenly had a change of plan and told the emperor about it, they would lose everything. The chances of this happening might only be one percent out of ten thousand, but now, Mu Mingtang and Xie Xuanchen couldn’t even take that kind of risk.
"There must be a way." Xie Xuanchen was quite calm about this. "New Year's Eve is around the corner. He will definitely let me celebrate the New Year. For at least two months, we won’t have to worry about anything."
Mu Mingtang was shocked by his calm attitude, and asked in surprise, "Really?"
"Really." Xie Xuanchen opened his eyes and glanced at her, then closed his eyes shut again, as he chuckled softly, "You don't have to look as if the sky is about to collapse, I'm not even that anxious, why are you so worried?"
"But…..." Mu Mingtang now understood the saying that goes “the eunuch is even more anxious than the emperor” and how it felt to be in such a situation, she couldn’t help but sit up and move towards Xie Xuanchen, "Do you not want to know what those spices are? You turned manic yesterday and it just so happens that the aromatic ball was lit yesterday, and the moment I found the aromatic ball, a maid who was from the spice room drowns to death. All these events are too coincidental."
Although Xie Xuanchen’s eyes were closed shut, the scenes kept lingering in his mind. How could he not want to know, he wanted to know what those residuals in the aromatic ball were, the effects they would bring, and when did this all start.
Xie Xuanchen remembered that it was on this very bed, it was also a dark night, Mu Mingtang once said that there might be more than meets the eye. At that moment, he didn't want to listen to her, nor did he dare dare to listen.
He didn't dare to let himself have any hope, then realise in the end, that he was the cause of all this. So he just simply expected the worst, no matter how worse things get, it would not be any worse than killing his own relatives and friends.
But now a faint spark ignited in his darkness, there was a burnt aromatic ball in his bedroom, and the timeline seemed to match with his sudden episode. He couldn't help but feel a small sense of hope, that maybe it was really something else that was manipulating him?
Xie Xuanchen was tortured by this conjecture all afternoon and was completely butchered. He didn’t dare to be hopeful, but he couldn't help but hope that it was true. If he was really being controlled or induced by an external object, it meant that his illness was controllable and he might be able to survive.
To him, the idea of tomorrow that normal people are accustomed to was an untouchable luxury for him.
The life described by Mu Mingtang sounded beautiful to him, but he never once dared to place himself in the picture. But now, there was a small yet bold hope that formed in Xie Xuanchen.
The more anxious Xie Xuanchen was, the more he had to force himself to be calm. He didn't want to give Mu Mingtang false hope, so he didn't dare to express any of it. People who had been desperate for too long were actually afraid of hope. Xie Xuanchen especially didn’t want to disappoint Mu Mingtang.
Xie Xuanchen would rather keep everything to himself. Perhaps Xie Xuanchen would find the courage to promise Mu Mingtang a future together in a calm and natural tone when everything was done and dusted.
When Mu Mingtang was done voicing out her doubts, she realised that Xie Xuanchen was indifferent about her words, and was as calm as ever. Mu Mingtang couldn't help but poke at Xie Xuanchen: "Why are you sleeping?"
"What else should I be doing?" Xie Xuanchen's tone still sounded calm, "No matter what the truth is, I would still have to sleep tonight, so what's the point of feeling anxious about it."
Mu Mingtang frowned. She always felt that this was a fallacy, but weirdly, she couldn't refute him. Mu Mingtang stared at Xie Xuanchen for a while, and then felt ashamed.
Look at him, he was still able to remain unphased even if mount Tai Shan collapsed before him, now this was what they call unfazed by gain or loss and this was the demeanour of a great general. In contrast, she was too impatient.
However, no matter how much she hinted to herself to be calm, Mu Mingtang couldn't help but not. She said: "The post-mortem examiner said that the maid slipped and fell into the water, which led to her death. Tonight, they would for sure move the body away, and we will never be able to look for another post-mortem examiner to do an autopsy. Half of the clues are gone, what should we do?"
"Who said there is no way for another autopsy check?" Xie Xuanchen suddenly opened his eyes and said, "Why do we need another post-mortem examiner, I’m more than enough.”
