Initially, Ruan Danchen did not want to offer any explanation. However, it was apparent that Senior Du did not wish to offend Yao Jingfei either, so she had no choice but to explain everything from the start. She did not exaggerate or add any personal opinions in her account of what had happened.
Manager Zou’s face darkened as he glared at Yao Jingfei. Then he said coldly and harshly, “Yao Jingfei, this is where you work. It is not a place for you to act mischievously. Qilin values abilities and performances instead of one’s background or identity. Not to mention, your father is only a board member, and I won’t even allow members of the Qi family to act unreasonably here. If you want to continue working as an assistant designer, then carry on professionally instead of acting like this. If you’re unsatisfied with the job, or if you think that it’s a waste of your talent, then feel free to resign. No one will beg you to take up this position again.”
“I think you should understand by now that you were accepted for this position through unethical means. This isn’t something that you should be proud of. Even the precious daughter of the Qi family doesn’t act as you did, showing off to every person she met when she worked here,” Manager Zou mocked as if he despised Yao Jingfei.
Yao Jingfei pouted in annoyance as she felt that Manager Zou was just spouting nonsense. Everyone knew who Qi Chengyue was. Was it necessary for her to show off in the company?
“If you’re unsatisfied and unconvinced, then ask Board Member Yao to talk to me. I want to know what he has to say about my standpoint on equity,” Manager Zou spoke sternly as if he believed in the sense of justice.
Manager Zou was fearless because he knew that he had Qi Chenglin’s support. He was trying to protect General Manager Qi’s wife, and the general manager had announced that Board Member Yao could go straight to the general manager if he had any issue.
Who would care about Board Member Yao if his actions made the general manager happy?
However, the staff in the design department was surprised by Manager Zou’s sense of justice and equity.
Then, Manager Zou turned to face his colleagues. “We don’t consider your background when you work in Qilin, and as for those who are incapable of performing, we certainly won’t allow them to stay here either. An assistant designer’s job is to assist you, so just give your orders. There’s no need to consider whoever’s identity here. If anyone tries to demand special privileges or threaten you with their identities and backgrounds, come and tell me about it. Especially if you’re not in the wrong. I firmly believe in honesty and sincerity in our work, and we don’t promote our ancestry here.”
“To sum it up, do whatever you’re supposed to do. Whoever tries to form a clique in this office, deliberately ingratiate others, or consider someone’s background before performing a task, then you should resign immediately. I don’t want such staff to work in my department.”
Manager Zou’s statement embarrassed and traumatized Yao Jingfei. He had mentioned ‘someone’s background’ and something about ‘those who are incapable’ purposely to mock her.
Yao Jingfei did not expect things to turn out that way. She had pleasant expectations for her first day of work as she thought that they would try to please her because of her background, even though she was only an assistant designer. Who would have guessed that things would go sideways when she arrived for work that morning?
Tears from the humiliation started to well up in her eyes. Then, Manager Zou said harshly, “Alright, you’ve caused enough ruckus this morning. Register your employment status quickly and come back for work. All the tasks in their hands are now yours.”
Everyone in the department was happy when they realized that Yao Jingfei was there to work on their tasks.
They did not dare to offend her father, Board Member Yao, but no one would find fault if they assigned Yao Jingfei to do what she was supposed to do anyway.
After Manager Zou left, Yao Jingfei glared at Ruan Danchen relentlessly before she headed toward the human resources department.
Senior Du requested Chen Siyu to take a few files to Ruan Danchen so that she could familiarize herself with how things ran in the design department. Ruan Danchen was studying the documents when Yao Jingfei returned to the office. Unlike Ruan Danchen, who came back with a box full of office supplies, Yao Jingfei returned with only a few items in her hands.
If one were to take a closer look, there was only a ballpoint pen, a few crayons and a ruler in a pen holder, and a notepad in her hands. That was all she got from the purchasing department.
The staff was shocked again. Did Yao Jingfei act out and showed off in the purchasing department too?
How else could they explain the fact that she received way lesser office supplies than they did back when they started at the company?
Yao Jingfei did not understand that either. Ruan Danchen got a big box full of office supplies like it was a wholesale, but she barely received a few office supplies.
Yao Jingfei had requested a lot more items while she was at the purchasing department, and the staff there was quite direct and straightforward about her request. However, Manager Luo came out of his office at that same time, as if he had sensed Yao Jingfei’s presence.
Naturally, Yao Jingfei greeted Manager Luo enthusiastically as she attempted to recover the imbalance treatment she had received from Manager Zou. She recalled that Manager Luo was rather kind toward her.
However, she did not expect Manager Luo to shake his head immediately when he saw her request list. He mentioned that she would only receive one notepad. They would give her folders when she needed them, and she did not require a lot of pens as she was only an assistant designer. Her job was only confined to designers’ tasks, and she could always request from the respective designer if she were instructed to color the design blueprints.
In conclusion, she was not allowed to receive every office supplies and could only get what she needed at that time.
Yao Jingfei had a habit of getting a complete set of everything she wanted, regardless of whether she needed them or not. She could always save them for a rainy day. She would always buy an extra piece of things that she adored, whether it was clothing, shoes, or other items. It was so that she could have a spare if the original ones were dirty or unusable.
Yao Jingfei hated it when Luo Yushu said that she could not have any extra items. She was not comfortable to break her usual habit.
Yao Qingzhi was in a meeting when Yao Jingfei called him on her way back to the design department. He did not pick up because his phone was on silent mode. Yao Jingfei had no choice but to return to the design department with a depressed look on her face.
However, the staff in the design department was reluctant to assign their tasks to Yao Jingfei despite what Manager Zou had announced. Manager Zou was aware of the situation, so he came out of the office and assigned tasks to Yao Jingfei personally.
For one to be a manager, they needed to know how to satisfy their superiors’ needs, and they also had to be capable in their line of work. Manager Zou knew about the projects that everyone was working on and the progress of each one, so he managed to assign quite a few tasks to Yao Jingfei. She was slammed with work that whole morning.

Soon, it was already lunch hour. Qi Chenglin had called Ruan Danchen just a few minutes before that. She blushed when she saw the caller ID ‘Sweetheart’ and picked it up. The phone felt warm in her hand.
One would need to revisit what happened the night before to understand the origin of ‘Sweetheart.’
Usually, Qi Chenglin would squeeze into the bathtub with Ruan Danchen shamelessly whenever she took a bath. However, he was busy the night before, and he had to continue his work in the study room. So, Ruan Danchen took her bath alone.
When he finished his bath and exited the bathroom, he saw Ruan Danchen as she stared at her cell phone. She was frowning at the phone, but he did not know the reason for that. Then he noticed that she was staring at his name in her phone’s address book. She appeared dazed when he leaned in for a closer look.
His name was on the Edit page of the address book.
Suddenly, Ruan Danchen felt a shadow loomed over her head, and she detected a familiar scent of a body shampoo. It was the same smell that Qi Chenglin’s body emitted, and that made Ruan Danchen felt hot.
Then, a drop of water dripped onto her phone’s screen.
Ruan Danchen lifted her head and saw a towel on Qi Chenglin’s head, and water slowly dripped from the hair on his forehead.
His fair skin was flushed pink after his shower, and the joints in between his long, slender fingers were whitish as he held the ends of his towel with his two hands.
He lowered his head slightly and fixed his gaze on her phone’s screen.
Then, he asked as Ruan Danchen looked at him, “What are you doing?”
His voice sounded a little lazy, and at the same time, deep but sexy. Ruan Danchen did not know if his tone was the aftereffect of the shower, but it sent shivers down her spine as it boosted her desire.
“I’m going to work in your company tomorrow, right? I just think that it’s unwise for others to notice your name on my phone when you call me. So I’m trying to create a nickname for you,” Ruan Danchen said. Qi Chenglin tried to towel dry his hair while he walked past Ruan Danchen and then sat down beside her.
She wrapped her arms around his arm as she thought that he would be unhappy. “It’s normal to use nicknames between couples. We seemed aloof because we use our names directly. To be honest, I’ve always wanted to create a nickname for you, but I just couldn’t think of a good one. Every nickname I thought of isn’t quite as compatible with your temperament.”
“What kind of temperament do I have?” Qi Chenglin knew that she was coaxing him, so he stared at her with a faint smile on his face.
Ruan Danchen’s face flushed pink. It was an apparent attempt to get her to praise him and to say what she liked the most about him.
She rested her head on his shoulder in response to his question. He had a kind of temperament which she could not describe in words, and she adored it.
Qi Chenglin remained silent. He did not want to change the topic, so he waited for her response. His gaze was deep and penetrating as he stared at Ruan Danchen, which made her feel bashful.
Ruan Danchen knew that she could not escape her fate, so she answered him. “Mature and steady with a calm temperament, a little indecent and shameless at times. But when that happens, you’ll look like a bastard. It is irresistible when a mature man radiates an indecent aura occasionally. There are more, but I don’t know how to describe them.”
Ruan Danchen thought that that was enough compliments for him. She had no idea how proud Qi Chenglin would be if she continued to praise him further.
Her praises almost made him feel as if he could soar through the sky. It was acceptable for the degree of compliments that she had just given him.
Her scalp radiated heat like a hot pan, and she felt too embarrassed to lift her head after that. Then, he brushed his lips from her forehead and down toward her nose, and then finally, he found her lips.
As he deepened his kiss, his firm, sculpted chest pressed against Ruan Danchen. She reached out with her arms to tangle around his thick, strong shoulders as their lips moved like two dancers as they sashayed through a melody, and their tongues delved into each other’s mouth. His scent mixed with a mint aroma from the toothpaste lingered in her mouth, and it made her heart sang in pure joy as euphoric bliss enveloped her.
Qi Chenglin was aroused too as his heart raced at an incredible speed. His warm and strong hands massaged her deltoid and waist, and he was unwilling to part his hands from the delicate softness on those areas.
He inhaled deeply at her fragrance that lingered between his teeth as he continued to peck on her lips affectionately.
He lowered his gaze to stare at her half-closed eyes as they looked blurry, helpless, and innocent. He adored her appearance so much that his slightly swollen lips curled up into a faint smile.
“How many nicknames did you have in mind before this?” Qi Chenglin leaned against the head of the bed before he lifted Ruan Danchen and put her into his embosom. He let her reddened, beautiful face rest on his chest so that he could find his way to her lips if he lowered his head. Then he kissed her on her forehead.
Qi Chenglin was satisfied with her position. His long and elegant fingers pinched her soft waist occasionally as he admired her appearance. She looked like a cute little cub with her misty eyes and her velvety, red lips. It was a kind of cuteness that he loved, but could never describe in words.
Ruan Danchen had not regained her calmness yet. She was aroused after the previous kisses, and her heartbeat fluttered as her body was stimulated.
She became restless in his embosom as she inhaled the body shampoo’s fragrance emitted from his body, which did not help her situation at all.
Her soft and slender fingers poked his chest, and they drew the occasional circles.
Qi Chenglin only wore a pair of long pants after his shower, and he threw the towel that was initially on his head onto a chair near the bed. He was half-naked, and she could feel his muscular, chiseled body wherever she touched.
Qi Chenglin thought that it was a funny, unconscious act. It stimulated a fire within him, and it burned strongly then. So, he did not stop her, and he merely enjoyed the sweet sensation as she continued to do that.
Then he tightened his arms that encircled her waist and yanked her closer to him.
Ruan Danchen blushed when she felt the burning heat that radiated from his body, and she started to feel nervous when his erection poked at her body.
Her face was as red as a beetroot and as warm as a hot pan. Then she rested her face on his chest. She was not sure if the warmth was from her face or his chest.
Then, she answered with a soft and trembling voice, “I was thinking about Chengcheng, but it felt like I was referring to Qi Chengzhi with that nickname, so I had decided against it. After that, I thought of calling you Linlin, but it felt incompatible with your temperament, and this nickname almost felt unfair to you, so I gave up on that as well.”
She frowned and immersed herself in deep thoughts. She ignored the discomfort beneath her temporarily as she focused all of her attention on her brain cells. Then, she said, “I really can’t think of any other nicknames. Let’s stick to Linlin then.”
Ruan Danchen reached for her phone that she had accidentally dropped when Qi Chenglin yanked her into his embosom.
When she had her phone in her hands and was about to change Qi Chenglin’s name, he snatched it away from her hands.
“What are you doing?” Ruan Danchen asked.
Qi Chenglin’s eyes twitched at her decision on his nickname. He would rather die than to let her replace his name with such a retarded nickname. His long finger pressed on the ‘Home’ button and then he unlocked her phone with a PIN since he could not access it via the fingerprint security. The PIN passcode was a combination of his and Qi Youxuan’s birthday.
She had initially used Qi Youxuan’s birthday as her passcode, and Qi Chenglin had noticed it when he had to unlock her phone after a system upgrade. He was unhappy that the passcode contained only Qi Youxuan’s birthday and had nothing to do with him. So he insisted that she changed it to the combination of their birthdays. He was also adamant that she put his birthday combination first, before Qi Youxuan’s.
Her phone was unlocked successfully after his fingers pressed on four digits nimbly. Then he replaced his name with a new nickname quickly.
Sweetheart.
Ruan Danchen recalled his serious expression and gentle gaze when he keyed in his new nickname on her phone. Her phone’s screen illuminated his face, and it seemed to accentuate the brightness that shone from his eyes.
Her face blushed as she went down the memory lane. Then, she grabbed her phone and exited the office immediately.
She was alone in the corridor when she picked up the call hastily. She was afraid that Qi Chenglin might feel impatient due to the long wait.
Qi Chenglin’s voice traveled to her ear before she could say anything, “Come up for lunch later.”
“I remember,” Ruan Danchen replied softly as a sweet smile appeared on her face unconsciously.
Qi Chenglin smiled warmly on the other end of the phone. His long, elegant left fingers played with the landline phone’s cable as he asked, “How was work in the morning?”
“It was good, the manager took care of me well,” Ruan Danchen said as she left out everything about Yao Jingfei. However, she knew that Manager Zou would inform Qi Chenglin later anyway.
Qi Chenglin was satisfied and continued to say, “Call me directly if you encounter any issues.”
Ruan Danchen agreed and hung up the call before she returned to her seat. She still had another minute to go before it was lunchtime.
All her colleagues in the design department finally summoned up their courage and assigned their tasks to Yao Jingfei after Manager Zou’s lead.
Manager Zou even instructed Yao Jingfei to make a cup of coffee for him. Yao Jingfei stood up unwillingly. She had decided to endure it for a little while longer and then complained to Yao Qingzhi later in the afternoon.
As Yao Jingfei made coffee in the pantry room, Manager Zou announced, “Pass all of these tasks to Xiao Yao next time and focus on your work. There’s no need to trouble your fellow designers anymore if you need a drink or food delivery, just let Xiao Yao do it since this is her job now.”
It was easy to follow Manager Zou’s train of thoughts. Yao Jingfei argued with Ruan Danchen that morning, and he had stood firmly on Ruan Danchen’s standpoint.
However, the general manager was quite narrow-minded sometimes. What if he blamed him for not setting a more severe punishment for Yao Jingfei?
He would probably be punished if General Manager Qi’s wife returned home and complaint to Qi Chenglin about the unfair treatment that she had received in the department.
Thus, he did his very best to get Yao Jingfei to perform as many tasks as possible. It was considered torture for her, so the general manager should be satisfied with the severity of the punishment.
Yao Jingfei returned with a cup of coffee in her hands, which she passed to Manager Zou.
Manager Zou did not return to his office. Instead, he wanted to demonstrate how her punishment was supposed to be done in front of all of the staff.
He took a sip of the coffee and frowned. “Instant coffee?”
Yao Jingfei nodded, and Manager Zou passed the cup back to Yao Jingfei. She shrieked when she took the cup as it was burning hot, and she nearly dropped it onto the floor.
“I don’t drink instant coffee. There are some coffee beans in the pantry, so brew a cup of coffee for me,” Manager Zou instructed.
Yao Jingfei frowned as she thought that Manager Zou was trying to cause more trouble for her.
“Yes?” Manager Zou asked coldly.
“Nothing,” Yao Jingfei answered as she stomped away angrily in her high heels.
After some time, she came back with another cup of coffee. Manager Zou tasted it and said, “Why does it taste so sour? How much milk did you put? It’s also too bitter.”
Yao Jingfei was the precious daughter in her family, and others usually waited on her. It was good enough that she knew how to brew a cup of coffee. It was simply too much to ask for her to know how much sugar or milk she should put in a cup of coffee.
She felt that Manager Zou was simply trying to embarrass her.
She thought that Manager Zou would demand her to make another cup of coffee, but he just frowned and waved his hand unhappily. “It’s fine. You can go back to work now.”
Yao Jingfei pouted. Then, she heard Manager Zou mumbled after he turned away from her. “What is this? Can’t even perform such a simple task well.”
His statement made Yao Jingfei felt uncomfortable. She was a proud woman, but Manager Zou commented as if she was a useless idiot who knew nothing.
She went back to her seat. Just as she was about to continue her work on Senior Du’s task, Zhang Jitong from the design department passed his duties to her as well.
“How am I supposed to finish all these? I still have a lot of work to do.” Yao Jingfei was unwilling to accept the additional tasks.
Zhang Jitong frowned and asked her, “Isn’t this the function of your job?”
“You guys did all of these by yourselves before I came here, so why are you throwing it at me now?” Yao Jingfei replied annoyingly.
