Chapter 488: Evil Dragon

The Black Flood Dragon directed its maw at the hundreds of thousands of corpses floating beneath it and took another deep breath. In the next second, a cyclone erupted from its mouth.
A violent typhoon engulfed everything beneath the dragon, forcibly ripping all the souls in the surrounding forests and the flooded city from their bodies. Those beneath Lord-tier were powerless to resist the dragon’s soul-devouring ability.
The sky was now filled with countless disembodied souls, which began merging to form a grayish translucent ball of light before disappearing into the Black Flood Dragon’s mouth. Countless translucent threads of light appeared from the rim of the dragon’s headless neck like feelers, intertwining with each other at a speed invisible to the naked eye. The translucent shape of a dragon’s head gradually took form on the stub of its neck where its head had once been. The threads of light coming out of its neck still seemed unreal.
Gao Peng noticed that the Black Flood Dragon’s status as shown on the database had changed from “moderately injured” to “lightly injured.”
A Water-type dragon… Isn’t this what the Dragon Slaying Chapter is supposed to counter? Shame that I still haven’t tamed it. If I had, taking this dragon down would be so much simpler, thought Gao Peng.
Even though the Dragon Slaying Chapter had been beaten by him twice, it was still extraordinarily stubborn and wouldn’t give in to his efforts to tame it. Forming a Blood Contract with a familiar would be all but impossible if one party was unwilling to accept the terms.
Even if Gao Peng had beaten the Dragon Slaying Chapter in combat, it still refused to sign itself away to a life of servitude. It seemed that Yu the Great really had confronted this evil beast in the past.
Gao Peng couldn’t help but think about the fact that when an evil dragon of this caliber wreaked havoc, it was definitely not something to be taken lightly. It was capable of causing catastrophic levels of flooding wherever it went. To most people back then, the dragon would have likely been regarded as a harbinger of the apocalypse.
While thinking about this, Gao Peng decided to let Dumby make its first move. Dumby immediately entered its Yin Soul Dominator state as it stepped into the air. Yin energy emanated profusely from its body and into the air around it. It pressed its palm out powerfully, dispersing the souls that were being absorbed by the dragon. Untethered from the dragon’s breath, the dispersed souls quickly faded into thin air.
Even though Dumby was a familiar, Gao Peng had forbidden it from absorbing the souls of any other humans or Red River Apes. He didn’t know if there was an afterlife, but if it did exist, it would probably be better than being swallowed by the Black Flood Dragon.
After its food source was interrupted, the Black Flood Dragon calmly turned to look at Gao Peng in the distance.
Without waiting for an order, the Desolate Frost Lion lunged at the Black Flood Dragon.
“Careful—its attacks can harm your soul. Try to avoid them as much as you can,” warned Gao Peng.
He rarely intervened in his familiars’ battles or gave them advice on how to fight, simply because most of them could overwhelm their opponents in combat without breaking a sweat. His advice would probably not make any difference.
However, this time was different. Upon hearing Gao Peng’s warning, the Desolate Frost Lion hesitated for a moment. Then it shook its head and redirected its attention towards the black dragon.
The Black Flood Dragon swung its tail at its opponent. The Desolate Frost Lion, which had intended to pounce on the dragon’s tail, swerved to the side. Smacking the air with its tail, the lion did a 360-degree turn in the air and rolled out of the tail’s way.
As the lion rolled away to safety, a white aurora of energy began building up in its mouth. Arcs of white light flew out of the growing ball of light and into the lion’s mouth. At the same time, it activated its field of frost and desolation, sending out an invisible ripple that penetrated the Black Flood Dragon’s body and ran through the mountains and water beneath its feet for miles. The water beneath them was instantly frozen, now glinting with a frozen light.
The Black Flood Dragon had felt only a slight chill when the ripple hit it. Its movements seemed to be somewhat affected.
Dooonnnggg! A pillar of blinding light illuminated the entire sky. It struck the Black Flood Dragon squarely in its head, which was still in the process of regenerating itself.
One side of the dragon’s head was completely frozen. A layer of blue-white ice now surrounded its right eye. On the first turn, not only had the Black Flood Dragon not gained the upper hand, it had already taken a bit of damage from the Desolate Frost Lion. This was in part due to the dragon’s own hubris, as well as the fact that its mind was still groggy from centuries of being sealed away.
The Desolate Frost Lion’s body was surrounded by a cold, biting wind that gradually evolved into a small snowstorm, allowing it to temporarily float in the air.
A cold sensation began creeping into the dragon’s bones. The violent pain that the Black Flood Dragon was now feeling made it even angrier. It narrowed its eyes into sharp slits at the lion. So palpable was its bloodlust that it was as if the dragon was ready to stab through the Desolate Frost Lion’s body like a blade.
Boom! The water beneath them began to roil, then a huge wave broke through the layer of ice that had formed on its surface.
A water pillar with a diameter of around 33 feet rose up into the air. Razor sharp teeth protruded from the surface of the spinning water pillar, slicing everything in their path.
All the rock and wood debris that was sent flying into the air by the water pillar exploded into a fine dust before it could even reach very far above the water surface.
Water pillars that were 100 miles high had popped up on the battlefield. The roar of the waves filled the air, as if countless ravenous beasts were presently screaming for blood.
Brrrooommm! The clouds grew darker across the battlefield, the rain falling even harder.
Gao Peng suddenly remembered the Black Flood Dragon’s other ability. Sensing that something was about to happen, he quickly shouted, “Stop before it completely changes the terrain of the battlefield. The higher the water concentration is in the air, the more damage it can cause.”
Even though Mythical was the highest grade Dumby could attain, it had temporarily dropped to Legendary-grade after reaching King-tier. Strictly speaking, Dumby was still a Legendary-grade monster like the Black Flood Dragon. The only difference was that Dumby had one more monster trait than the latter due to the fact that its highest attainable monster grade was Mythical-grade.
As a result, Dumby wouldn’t be able to overwhelm the Black Flood Dragon like every other opponent it had ever faced. Also, Dumby’s main ability wasn’t especially suited for single combat. Its Heart of the Yin Soul was the only thing capable of supporting it in battle. In the face of opponents whose grades and tiers weren’t terribly high, Dumby could simply reach into their souls and bring them to their knees with a thought. However, Gao Peng didn’t think that was a humane way to subdue a monster.
Also, this dragon was a Soul-type monster. It had to have some level of resistance to other Soul-type attacks. Even if Dumby had entered its Yin Soul Dominator state, it wouldn’t be able to put down the dragon instantly by reaching into its soul.
This was bad. Even though Da Zi, Flamy, and Goldie were Legendary-grade familiars as well, all three of them were only Level 50, just one level away from reaching King-tier. Right now, the three of them wouldn’t be of much help in taking down the Black Flood Dragon.
Goldie’s Gui power only allowed it to reinforce its physical strength, not its spiritual fortitude. This was one of Goldie’s few weaknesses; it didn’t have many ways to adequately handle Soul-type attacks.
On the other hand, the Desolate Frost Lion had returned to its peak grade—Legendary. However, the lion was four levels lower than the Black Flood Dragon. It was only Level 55 presently.
Gao Peng had never been in such a pinch before… If only he had managed to subdue the Dragon Slaying Chapter back then.
He read through the database’s entries regarding his familiars and the dragon once more. However, the situation before him didn’t look any more hopeful. The only thing he could do right then was let the Desolate Frost Lion and Dumby hold the dragon back long enough for Stripey, the Growing Brain, and Dumby’s King-tier skeletons to get there. Only then would they be able to gang up on the dragon together.
The Black Flood Dragon had seemed a bit dazed not long before. However, Desolion’s attack was enough to bring it back to its senses. It was now staring straight at Gao Peng with its one good eye, which was filled with hatred and disdain.
This human must be the master of these wretched creatures! He must die!
