People were expecting all kinds of things but it turned out to be a mere album containing Qiu Ran’s photos back when she was alive.
Everything was seen so clearly on the screen, including Huo Zhenning’s pale expression with a hidden sorrow in his eyes. “Qiu Ran…” He mumbled as he flipped through the pages. There were photos taken during their first anniversary, their first date, their marriage and their honeymoon. Then there were both of them holding Huo Yunting when he was born, going to school and graduation.
Right when everyone was expecting this to be a nostalgic album, the last photo was mind-blowing.
It was—a photo of Qiu Ran—at the mortuary.
She was on the tray. Her sunken face was colorless. Her lips were grey as her hair. Nothing of her former grace retained. If it was not the photos before, the guests would never associate such a feeble woman as a madame from a wealthy, well-known family of the capital.
All that remained was a shriveled, dead body which nearly sent Huo Zhenning to the ground. He could not bear to see it so much that he closed his eyes to take a deep breath and stay still.
No doubt the incident of a son attending the marriage anniversary of his father and stepmother with his mother’s memorial plate had struck the guests. No matter how the old couple claimed it, circumstantially they had indirectly killed the mother.
“I can’t believe this happened and no one in the world knows this!”
“How disgusting? How can this woman do this? Stealing someone’s husband, even killing the wife?”
“I knew that woman never was as kind as she seems.”
“Look at those photos. They were a happy family and you just have to ruin it.”
“Does that woman even have a heart?”
Xue Yuming had become the center of attention as curses rang in her ears deafening as punishing blows. Her smile crumbled as her body quivered. She panted with clenched fists and biting teeth.
Huo Yunting, this is not over yet. We’ll see.
Her breath turned heavier as her face reddened in wrath. Her spite towards Huo Yunting grew like the pumping veins at her forehead.
“Did you hear that? She even manipulated her own daughter.”
“Forsake? Even the son decided to use a better term to save her face. I bet she did an abortion to get rid of ‘burden’.”
The comments became harsher and increasingly ear-piercing to her. Right when she was about to blow up, she turned away and nearly tripped herself as she ran away.
Huo Li passed the album properly to the stunned old man.
“My dear old master, have fun reading. Keep it well.” Huo Li decided to leave the place as soon as possible. It was a filthy place after all as his Brother Ting declared.
Huo Zhenning did not manage to hold the album before Huo Li left, that it fell onto the ground.
He bent down as his shaking, veiny hands reached out to that smile of Qiu Ran in their wedding photo which formed a powerful contrast to her final shot on the screen.
“Jesus Christ. I can’t believe this could actually happen. His ex-wife is dead and look at him, having a world-class celebration with his *new* wife.”
“I know right, men can be so shameless and ruthless.”
“Well, I think this is the end of the party. They sure have a lot to deal with now. Let’s go.”
The guests left the hall hurriedly, not forgetting to give a glance at the host kneeling down on the floor.
“Take it away.” Huo Zhenning’s voice rang hoarsely. The butler came to him and bowed at his order as he got up laboriously and headed back to his room.
There’s NOTHING HUMANE ABOUT THIS WOMAN! Why do you even love her?
Huo Yunting’s words resounded in his head. There were questions in Huo Zhenning which he immediately urged answers.
He slammed the door open as Xue Yuming was sitting by the bed with her head lowered in a seemingly tearing agony.
His inquiry sank upon seeing his wounded wife. In turn, he showed concerns in the form of gentle words.
“Yu Ming…”
Her head remained low.
She was thinking how Huo Yunting knew about the truth…
The truth of her purposely killing her own baby.
She remembered she had only told this to Yang Yang.
Could it be that—my own daughter revealed the secret to Huo Yunting?
How should I face Huo Zhenning from now on? If he ever pressed on this issue, how should I get away with this?
There were tears over her smudged face. Huo Zhenning pulled a few pieces of tissue papers and started wiping her face for her.
“Don’t mind whatever Yunting had said tonight. He just has a bitter tongue. Most importantly, I don’t believe all the things he said. Not at all.”
“I don’t know!!!” She whined, “I never knew we—killed her…” She turned to look at her husband, “It’s all my fault! I should have never come into your life. If I did not show up, you’ll still be spending a peaceful life with her!”
