What Could He Want from Me?
“It’s me.” The reply came through. Jenny could hear the warmth in Gilbert’s voice, soothing her gentle
heart.
“How’ve you been? When are you coming home?” she asked kindly, not asking other things like why he
hadn’t called her for some time or whether he had finally let her go.
“I’ve been well. The branch here’s had a good start, so it’ll be some time before I go back,” he said.
Jenny smiled and was about to speak when Gilbert asked, “I heard you broke up with Alec?”
He didn’t know when they got together; all he heard was they had broken up.
Jenny’s smile fell just the slightest at his question. “Oh, you heard about that too?”
“The news had even made it internationally, huh?” Jenny thought.
Unbeknownst to her, Gilbert had actually been catching up with her life updates from overseas. He had
instructed Zack as well as some bodyguards to watch after her from the sidelines, none of this made
known to Jenny herself.
“It’s really big news, Jenny. I couldn’t have not heard,” Gilbert teased.
Jenny didn’t know what to tell her brother. She couldn’t exactly reveal that it had to do with Quinn Blue,
or Gilbert would only despise Alec further. She didn’t know why she still cared about this, though.
With a dry laugh, Jenny explained, “We weren’t compatible, is all.”
“Really? Not because he wasn’t good to you?” Gilbert asked, hesitant to believe her.
Jenny’s heart dropped, though Gilbert couldn’t see or feel this. “Of course not. He’d never be able to
push me around, you know that.”
Gilbert nodded to himself. Jenny wasn’t a doormat. With a sigh, he said, “I told you, you two weren’t
right for each other back then. Now you see how things have turned out?”
“I know.” If only she had listened to her big brother. Still, regret was useless. She couldn’t have known
she was being used as a substitute back then.
“Good. The best thing to do is to stay away from him right now. I’ll come back as soon as I can.” Gilbert
reassured her as if worried Jenny would get bullied again.
Jenny nodded. She had broken up with Alec, so distance was natural.
Gilbert said a few other things before finally bidding farewell, but then Jenny said, “Gilbert, did Grandpa
ever tell you anything before he passed?”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
Jenny took a deep breath and then explained her situation with Christopher. “I know he has some
ulterior motives; I just don’t know what. But I’m just a country girl from Orchid Village. I really don’t see
what he could want from me.”
She actually wanted to mention the fact that even Alec’s grandfather seemed to harbor some
intent toward her, but that was something only in the periphery of doubt, not ascertained, so she stayed
silent on it.
On the other side of the phone, however, and unbeknownst to Jenny, Gilbert’s face had turned a
frighteningly dark shade of grey.
