Chapter 190 – If only he still had his eyes and left leg. (3)
He looked at the little human in front of his with the mask on with what he thought was the safest look and let out an “aowu” impatiently. He wanted to confirm where this “human” came from and whether she was merely a figment of his imagination.
His inquiring “aowu” asking Ruan Qiuqiu about her identity was filled with more anticipation and cautiousness that she had ever heard before.
Little Mr. Gray Wolf was probably fairly nervous. He had all the tell-tale signs that big Mr. Gray Wolf had when he was nervous, if not to a larger extent. His ears and tail were showing already and the tips were almost turning pink. His cracked lips shut tightly but his eyes stared at her intensely.
Looking at little Mr. Gray Wolf’s look, Ruan Qiuqiu felt her heart ached and had no idea what to say.
Her original plan was to reached out to his subconscious when she found him so big Mr. Gray Wolf would wake up.
But now…
How was she to tell little Mr. Gray Wolf that, in the future, he would turn into an awkward, handicapped, half demon half monster who was progressively turning more into a monster.
And how was she going to tell him that she was not actually there in his childhood when he was misunderstood.
In fact, she was not by his side through his bumpy adolescence either.
She was only there too late.
Both Ruan Qiuqiu’s heart and mouth ached. She did not know how to answer little Mr. Gray Wolf’s question. She only lifted her arm, tucked onto his sleeve, and placed the little leather pouch with the herb inside into his hand.
The baby wolf pup was still an entire head taller than her even in their illusion.
His hand, compared to hers, was huge. “Yours.”
Ruan Qiuqiu did not respond to his question. Little Mr. Gray Wolf was still looking at her with his head lowered. His eyelashes fluttered. He did not put away the little leather pouch. He only licked his little pointy teeth, irritated. His voice was even more cautious than it was before. “Aowu? (Why did you help me?)”
“Ao…” He whimpered a few more times before he remembered that Ruan Qiuqiu, in front of him, was a human.
Human could not understand the language of the wolves nor could he speak human language.
Ruan Qiuqiu listened to little Mr. Gray Wolf went from “Why did she help him” to “I might be cursed and you should stay away from me” to “I forgot that you are human and couldn’t understand me.”
She didn’t know what to say. She was about to tell him that she could actually understand his voice when, lo and behold, the wolf pup who had always been awkward since he was a child, said softly to her with a someone vicious look, “Aowu. (I feel that you are very familiar.)”
Little Mr. Gray Wolf looked at Ruan Qiuqiu. There was a hint of pain and loss in his beautiful eyes. After a little while, a low and hoarse voice came from his throat. “Aowu… .. (You are… Qiuqiu… …)”
His voice had become much more childish. His narrow eyes looked at her squarely. He was still in his child form but, somehow, his eyes seemed to be filled with the sort of understanding that only comes with age and a hit of barely detectable sorrow.
It was almost as if big Mr. Gray Wolf was the one standing in front of her.
Ruan Qiuqiu had not expected that Yuan Jue could remember her even in his own illusion.
She felt a burning sensation going from her eyes to her cheeks and the sides of her ears. She could feel tears coming to her eyes.
Ruan Qiuqiu dared not look into Yuan Jue’s eyes. She merely lowered her head and could sort of see his feel that was covered in cuts from the rocks.
Needless to say, those happened when he was gathering the herbs. Even his wolf skin ripped a little. It curled up a little and half covered over his calf. That, along with some of the marks from being stoned earlier and his waving tail, should make a funny image.
Ruan Qiuqiu, however, was not able to laugh. She couldn’t help but wished that if only she could … earlier, just a little earlier.
Wouldn’t it be so nice if he could still have his eyes and his left leg?
