“Don’t ask!” She wasn’t confident of his reaction and could only mask her fidgeting with a snarl.
Sheng Yize looked at her innocently. “At least tell me what happened so that I can help you with justifiable cause. It’s not like I can copy Mr. Song and beat her up without asking any questions, right? That wouldn’t be classy at all…”
Even if he was covering for her fault, he wanted to justify his action!
An Xiaxia wrung her hands together and after a long while, she said, “Can you give me some time to think it over?”
“Alright.” Sheng Yize rubbed her hair and went into the kitchen.
An Xiaxia huddled on the sofa and stared blankly at the TV screen. She only grew more flustered as she pondered.
She hopped off the sofa and dashed barefooted into the kitchen.
Sheng Yize wore a pair of glasses and was making a stir fry with unhurried movements, looking extremely elegant.
An Xiaxia wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, rubbed her cheek against his back, and called his name in her soft voice. “Sheng Yize…”
“What?” Sheng Yize chuckled. “Are you hungry? Just bear with me a little bit longer. Lunch is almost ready.”
The little woman held him so tight. Only days ago, she was running away from his touch, but now she acted as if he was the straw and she the drowning man clutching at it. No matter what he said, she wouldn’t let go of him.
He cajoled and reprimanded her, and even mentioned doing it right there on the kitchen floor, but she stubbornly held on to him.
“What’s wrong?” Sheng Yize found her unusually clingy today.
An Xiaxia sniffed. “Can we go visit Grandma Song’s grave? Didn’t you say she was nice to you when you were little…”
Sheng Yize was surprised and blurted out, “Did I say that before?”
He had told An Xiaxia about his childhood, but he didn’t think he had mentioned Grandma Song…
“You did… Let’s go see her…” She cosied up to him with light and affectionate words, which he couldn’t resist at all. He had no choice but to say, “Alright, but you have to let go of me first, or my stir fry will burn again.”
An Xiaxia released him as told and trotted off to the living room. Halfway there, she turned back, stood on her toes, and kissed Sheng Yize on his cheek.
Sheng Yize’s pupils seemed to turn dark right away. His eyes flickered dangerously, as if he was a beast that had finally seen its prey show up.
An Xiaxia sensed the danger and jumped away immediately. “You’re going to burn the dish!”
Seeing her frightened reaction, Sheng Yize didn’t press forward. He gave her a sidelong glance and said, “Stop messing around. Go wait in the living room.”
“Alright…”
After lunch, Sheng Yize asked Auntie Luo for directions, then took An Xiaxia to where Grandma Song was buried.
The graveyard was quite some distance away and up on a hill. It took them a while to finally get there.
Sheng Yize put the flowers and fruit he had bought in front of the headstone, then began to burn the joss paper.
An Xiaxia stared at the headstone with unblinking eyes. On it was a portrait of the deceased Grandma Song. She had been a very kind and loving old lady and in the picture, she had a warm and gentle smile.
Before she knew it, tears had welled up in her eyes. An Xiaxia had to dig her fingers into her palms to stop her tears from falling.
“Xiaxia…” Sheng Yize frowned. He now seriously thought that An Xiaxia was acting very strangely.
An Xiaxia replied with an “ah” and only came back to herself after a long moment. She asked in a bewildered voice, “Did you call me?”
“Why are you crying?” He dried her tears with a tissue. An Xiaxia looked away, trying to find an excuse. “The smoke from the joss paper got in my eyes…”
Sheng Yize darted a subtle look at the joss paper. The wind wasn’t blowing in An Xiaxia’s direction at all. How could it have gotten into her eyes?
“Xiaxia, am I the most important person to you?” he asked gently.
“Of course you are…”
“In that case, can you tell me, exactly what have you remembered?”
