Call Me Hubby
The siblings chatted for a short while in the dining room before Whitney joined them downstairs.
The red silk scarf around her neck added a hint of seductiveness to the white office wear on her. It was
a vital finishing touch to her outfit and made it extra eye–catching.
Jasmine saw her even from a distance away.
“It’s my first time seeing Whitney wear a scarf. This outfit looks so demure. Whitney, you’re tall and
have a great figure. You look just like an air stewardess.”
Lucas also whipped his head around and nodded in admiration. “Indeed. Jasmine, you can learn how
to dress better from Whitney. She even makes office wear look so good. You surely have lots of room
for improvement.”
Jasmine pouted. “You’re annoying, Lucas. Why do you always have something to say about me?”
The atmosphere between the siblings was amicable.
Charles, however, had his eyes lowered as he continued eating. He did not seem interested in
Whitney’s outfit at all. “Aren’t you coming over? The whole family is waiting for you.”
“All right…”
Clenching her fists, Whitney quickened her pace to the dining table and sat down in her seat. Then,
she began digging in without saying a word:
Seemingly not having much appetite, she said she was full after eating a little and returned to her room.
Jasmine somehow felt that something was not quite right.
“Charles, Whitney doesn’t seem to be in a good mood tonight. You came back with her. Did you two
have a fight?”
Charles flashed a faint smile. “No. Why would we fight all of a sudden? Continue with your meal.”
“Then why is she unhappy? How can she be full when she ate so little?” probed Jasmine in concern.
“How would I know?”
His tone was especially cold.
Displeasure surged within Jasmine, and she stood up for Whitney. “What’s wrong with you, Charles?
Whitney is your wife. You should care about her feelings and try to console her to cheer her up.”
Charles was frustrated by those rants that he eventually decided not to say anything more. “Fine. I’ll go
and take a look at her after I finish eating.”
“That’s more like it.”
Jasmine somehow felt that something was amiss with the couple. It was almost as if there was a secret
that the family did not know of.
She worriedly reminded, “Charles, I’ve known Whitney for some time. Not only does she have a great
personality, but she also loves you and takes care of you so well. There aren’t many women who can
become an amazing wife like her. You’ll definitely regret it if you don’t cherish her!”
A crease instantly appeared between Charles‘ brows. The displeased man deliberately took a piece of
fatty meat from the stew and put it on Jasmine’s plate.
“Just eat. I can’t believe all these dishes aren’t enough to stop you from talking.”
Jasmine snorted. She took a closer look at the piece of meat on her plate, and a disgruntled look
crossed her face. “That’s so oily! I don’t want to eat this!”
Charles ordered in a deep voice, “Don’t be picky.”
Jasmine was rendered speechless.
What a grudgeful man he is!
After dinner, Charles returned to the bedroom as promised.
The door of the room swung open.
Whitney’s back was slightly bent and facing the door as she placed a blanket over the couch.
Hearing some noises, she turned her head around. “I’ll sleep on the couch tonight. I’ve already
changed the bedsheet and blanket. You can have a good night’s sleep.”
With his lips pursed, Charles closed the door behind him.
“Why did you eat so little tonight and look so sad? Jasmine is getting suspicious.”
Whitney went pale.
She had been somewhat surprised when she heard the first half of Charles‘ sentence. She had thought
he had taken note of her tiny meal portion, but it turned out that he had said all that because of
Jasmine.
With her head held low, she slowly turned around and apologized without looking at the man.
“I’m sorry. I had no appetite tonight. I’ll be more careful in the future and try to hide my emotions better.”
At the sight of her meek demeanor, Charles felt an inexplicable bolt of rage kindled in him.
He had always hoped Whitney would be more obedient at fulfilling her obligations as listed in their
agreement.
Yet, for some reason, he felt awfully uneasy after seeing how she had transformed from her cheery and
energetic self a few days ago to the submissive woman she was now,
“You don’t have to tidy the couch. I won’t be sleeping here tonight.”
He recollected himself, opened the door again, and strode out without looking back.
Watching as the door slammed close, Whitney felt an indescribable emptiness in her heart.
With no intention of sleeping on Charles‘ bed, she continued putting the blanket over the couch. No
matter how hard I try, the things that don’t belong to me will never become mine.
Charles chose to sleep at the study since he had work matters to settle anyway.
Whitney spent the entire night curled up on the couch in the bedroom.
The following morning, when Whitney walked out of the bedroom after washing up, she ran into
Charles, who happened to be coming down from the study upstairs.
She froze in her tracks and muttered, “Good morning, Mr. Newton.”
Charles strolled down the stairs, exuding a cold aura. As he approached Whitney, he touched her neck.
with his well–defined fingers.
The mark left behind by the strangle last night had not faded. It was slightly red and faintly visible.
“Why didn’t you apply some medication before sleeping last night? Do you intend to have breakfast.
downstairs in this state so that Jasmine and Lucas can see the bruises?”
The frosty tone left Whitney slightly taken aback. It took her some time before she snapped back to her
senses and held her neck. “I’m sorry. I forgot about it. I–I’ll put on a silk scarf for work today.”
The first–aid kit is inside the cabinet in the living room and not in the bedroom. The housekeepers
would have spotted it if I had come down to get it last night. I wouldn’t be able to explain myself if it was
so, would I?
However, Whitney was not planning on explaining. She knew Charles would not believe her even if she
tried to explain, and instead, would only blame her. That was why she reckoned it was better to
apologize.
Just as she was about to return to the room, Charles grabbed her arm. He bent over, leaned closer to
her
ear, and said softly, “Other than in private, do not call me Mr. Newton again when we’re in this house.
Call me Hubby.”
But you aren’t actually my husband…
Even though Whitney could not get that word out of her mouth, she still agreed to the request, “All
right/”
Charles refused to loosen his grip. A teasing look appeared on his face as he quirked a brow. “Do it
once
now.”
Whitney lifted her head in shock. She was entirely baffled by the man before her.
This man is really unpredictable. He was still angry and berating me for showing the bruise on my neck
a moment ago, yet now he’s staring at me with a grin and demanding me to call him Hubby.
Goosebumps enveloped Whitney’s body, and she was reluctant to do as told. “Y–You should at least
give me some time… I can’t do it immediately.”
Charles grabbed onto her arm tightly, unwilling to let go. “You have to do it.”
Whitney was left with no choice.
A housekeeper, who happened to be passing by, caught sight of the couple leaning close to each other
and seemingly acting very intimate. Thinking it was a romantic act between them after waking up, the
housekeeper quickly walked away in embarrassment.
The tips of Whitney’s ears turned red. She bit her lip and called out awkwardly, “H–Hubby…”
She then tried to loosen herself from Charles‘ grip, yet the man was still reluctant to let her go.
“Can’t you speak clearly? Call me properly again.”
Whitney’s face flushed red, and her voice turned softer and softer as she said, “Hubby, I’m going to be
late for work. Hurry up and let go of me.”
Her voice was soft and gentle, making it extremely pleasing to the cars.
Feeling contented, Charles loosened his restraint on Whitney and let her return to the room.
As he gazed at the back of the woman who fled the scene, he could still hear her voice replay in his
head. The way she had called him Hubby was soft and feminine, and he got carried away easily.
After breakfast, Charles headed out of the villa to get his car before leaving for work.
Whitney was still sitting at the dining table, eating. She planned to eat slower so that she would not
have to leave the house together with Charles.
Suddenly, Jasmine asked doubtfully. “Whitney, Charles has already left. Don’t you two always leave the
house together?”
Unable to continue pretending that she did not see Charles‘ departure, Whitney could only put down
the fork and follow him out of the villa.
Charles had long legs and thus walked much faster than her.
When she finally reached the open–air parking lot, the man started the engine and whizzed right past
her without waiting for her to get in the car.
Whitney froze in her spot, embarrassed.
