Gwendolyn arched a brow. Her tone was playful as she asked, “Can you really assuage my anger?”
Cedrick rubbed her soft cheeks and righteously declared, “I can be quite effective. In fact, I’m probably
more effective than most expensive medicine. If you don’t believe me, you can check it out yourself.”
He leaned over and planted a kiss on her red lips.
As they continued to kiss, they made their way up the stairs.
When Zoey came downstairs and accidentally witnessed the romantic scene before her, she quickly
turned around and left.
Nope, I didn’t see anything at all! I should give them their privacy.
The embarrassing sounds were muffled as the door to the bedroom was shut.
When night fell, Gwendolyn finally received a phone call from Treyton.
Although she answered the call, she refused to speak first.
After a few seconds of heavy silence, Treyton finally said, “Kiddo, I’m sorry. I was wrong.”
As Treyton had not had anything to eat for the entire day, his voice sounded somewhat feeble.
Gwendolyn’s tone was light as she asked, “Have you thought it through?”
Treyton sounded sincere as he replied, “Yeah. I was too rash. Since the engagement was announced
in public, I’m afraid it’s a foregone conclusion. Even if we gave away twenty percent of the company’s
shares, Craig wouldn’t relent.”
Gwendolyn sighed in relief. “It’s good that you’ve thought it through. So, since you’ve been thinking
about it for a day and night, do you have any suggestions?”
“We should try to meet up with Jennifer first and discover the reason she agreed to the engagement in
public. If she’s truly changed her mind, I will not interfere. However, if Craig had done something to her,
I will do everything in my power to take her away.”
Gwendolyn sighed again. He’s got the first part right, but the rest of his thoughts are still too rash.
“Jennifer is now the daughter of the Newton family. Are you planning to elope with her? Craig will
definitely send the police after you.”
Moreover, Craig worked with law enforcement himself. He would be able to mobilize them swiftly.
Treyton fell silent at that.
He had a hard time controlling his rationality when it came to matters related to Jennifer.
If he found out that Craig actually did something to Jennifer and hurt her, he would go mad and
perhaps even shoot him.
Silence permeated from both ends of the line as they fell into deep thought.
A minute later, Gwendolyn spoke first. “It’s not ideal to discuss this over the phone. I’ll get the Federal
Bureau of Investigation to pull their people back. Come over to Harrick Villa first, then we’ll talk face to
face.”
“Okay.”
Half an hour later, Treyton arrived and knocked on the door.
Nico and Summer had also arrived. The five of them sat on the couch and began to discuss their plan
of action.
However, the living room soon plunged into a long silence as their expressions turned grim and no one
spoke.
After some time, Summer broke the silence.
“Gwendolyn, this truly is a difficult situation. Regardless of everything else, Jennifer is now a lady of the
Newton family. Even if she is being held against her will by Craig, or even if she’s being threatened, it’s
difficult for us to meddle with the Newton family’s affairs as long as he can come up with a plausible
reason for his actions. We can’t whisk Jennifer away, nor can we make her call off the engagement.”
Nico added, “Craig has declared that Jennifer is sick and cannot leave the residence. She hasn’t been
working either. It’s likely very difficult to meet with her.”
The living room once again plunged into a deathly silence.
Eventually, Cedrick said, “Craig is a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Although I can’t
involve myself in the Newton family’s matters, I can come up with a suitable excuse to get Nico to
search the Newton residence. He can use the opportunity to meet with Jennifer.”
If they could get Cedrick to pull strings at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, things would proceed
more smoothly.
Gwendolyn said, “If we use an excuse to barge in, we may end up in an impasse with Craig. That can
be our last resort. I will head to the Newton residence tomorrow morning and try a gentle approach. If
it’s truly impossible, we’ll do it the hard way.”
Everyone nodded in agreement to the decision.
Gwendolyn pondered for a moment before continuing, “Today, Ceddy and I tried probing into the
engagement. I reckon Craig will not let the matter go. Moreover, the exorbitant engagement gift that the
Abbot family gave to the Newton family will have to be given back untouched. Since Craig cares about
profits, it will be impossible to expect that he willingly returns it.”
Summer stared at Gwendolyn admiringly. “Does that mean you have a plan in mind?”
Gwendolyn smiled slightly. “If we can’t tackle the matter from Craig’s side, we’ll just have to approach
Remus and the Abbot family instead.”
Everyone’s eyes brightened.
Unashamedly, Cedrick wrapped his arm around her slender waist and praised her lavishly, “Darling,
you’re so smart.”
Unsurprised by Cedrick’s show of affection, the three others did not react to his behavior.
Summer asked, “Since Remus has spent so much money to get himself engaged to Jennifer, surely he
won’t withdraw that easily, right?”
Gwendolyn’s expression turned serious. “The Abbot family’s hotel dining business is doing quite well.
Perhaps we can use this angle. I recall someone having a lot of shares in various hotel dining
businesses.”
Treyton, who had been silent the entire time, immediately understood what she was getting at.
Gwendolyn was talking about Asher.
Although the latter had resigned from his positions at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and aviation
career, he still owned a lot of both domestic and international shares.
Gwendolyn turned to look at Treyton. “Perhaps you can meet with him and request his help.”
Treyton nodded in response. “Okay. I’ll give it a try.”
Glancing at the clock that hung on the wall, Gwendolyn noticed that it was quite late.
“Let’s call it a day. The rest can wait until we meet with Jennifer and gain a better understanding of the
situation. We’ll reevaluate then.”
Nico tugged at Summer to get up. “Cedrick, Gwendolyn, Summer and I will be taking our leave first.”
Gwendolyn and Cedrick nodded.
Treyton remained seated and made no move to leave.
“Treyton, it’s getting pretty late,” Gwendolyn prompted.
Treyton clutched his stomach and inhaled deeply, seemingly in pain as he stared at Cedrick
beseechingly. “My dear brother-in-law, I haven’t eaten in a day. I’m so hungry that I don’t have the
strength to move. Could you get me some supper so I can satiate my hunger before I leave?”
Gwendolyn was rendered speechless.
Cedrick tried to hold back a smile. “All right. Since you’ve thought it through so quickly, I’ll make you
something good. I’ll have a drink and keep you company as you have your supper tonight.”
Treyton gulped and let out a long sigh. “That’s great!”
Nico and Summer, who were almost at the door, perked up when they heard the word “supper.”
Shamelessly, the two of them doubled back.
Nico grinned. “Cedrick, I’m feeling quite hungry as well. I’m sure you don’t mind cooking a little more,
right? I could have some drinks with you guys too!”
Summer clung to Gwendolyn’s arm and said, “Gwendolyn, Mr. Jenson is a great cook. I haven’t had his
food in such a long time! Allow us to stay and sate our hunger. Besides, we can even meet the babies.”
Gwendolyn did not know what to say. Is this what they meant when they said it’s easy to invite people
to come and help you but difficult to get them to leave afterward?
Cedrick, who had been in high spirits, stared at Summer’s hand that was on Gwendolyn with a dark
and cold gaze.
“You can stay for supper, but you’re not allowed to take advantage of my wife!”
