The slender Concorde jet took off from the Beirut International Airport in Lebanon.
The plane soared high into the sky and flew towards China at supersonic speeds.
On the plane, Zoey sat by a window, staring out of it in a daze.
Until now she’d felt her experiences over the past hour or so were a dream.
However, she quietly looked at Charlie, sitting in another seat not far away with his eyes closed and
resting.
She could finally see that it all was not a dream, but reality.
Thinking of Charlie going to Syria alone and saving herself from the brink of death, Zoey felt very guilty
along with being grateful.
She felt that after even after so many years of reading about the world, and also studying economics
and finance, that in the end, she was completely naive and couldn’t see the truth of human nature.
At first, she was so ashamed of abandoning her peers, but now thinking about it carefully she realized
they really weren’t good people.
Even though they may have had a chance of freedom, they foolishly squandered it through their own
actions and choices.
They were then angry that she would be freed, while they had to stay and meet their fate.
As a result, they would’ve rather had her die with them, than have a chance to save herself.
This made her fully appreciate the evil and selfishness of human nature.
With these thoughts she stood silently, walked over to Charlie, and sat down quietly beside him.
Charlie, resting with his eyes closed, felt someone sit beside him.
He opened his eyes, turned his head to see Zoey and smiled.
“Ms.
Riley, why don’t you take advantage of the flight and get some rest?”
Zoey looked down and said embarrassingly “My heart has been very confused, I couldn’t sleep…”
Then she faced Charlie and said with shame, “Mr.
Wade, I am really sorry for today.”
Charlie smiled slightly, “Are you doing it for your friends?”
“Well…” Zoey nodded slightly, and said with emotion: “I really didn’t think that they would act like this.
You are right; I don’t know enough about human nature.
Maybe it’s because I lack any real social experience.”
Charlie smiled and said, “The more socially inexperienced you are, the more you prove that you have
been well protected since childhood.
Many adolescents and teenagers gain a lot of social experience early on, which proves that their own
families do not protect them enough”
Charlie chuckled and continued “Furthermore, what you’ve experienced is indeed quite unique.
Under normal circumstances it’d be impossible for the average person to experience being kidnapped
by a rebel military in another country.
Think about it, there are over seven billion in the world, of the population I’d estimate not even seven
thousand could share this kind of experience with you.
That’s genuinely one in a million! Congratulations, after today you’ve experienced something 99.99% of
the population never will.
You came into the situation inexperienced, and now the vast majority of people are left behind.”
Zoey was even more ashamed and blushed, “Don’t make fun of me.
I know that from the beginning to the end I’ve been stupid about this.”
Charlie agreed and said, “If you ask me to speak truthfull, you were really stupid regarding this matter.
Anyway, your heart was in the right place, but the way you went about it was wrong.
If you really wanted to reduce war in the world, you shouldn’t be filming an anti-war documentary in
Syria, but promoting anti-war sentiments at the door of the White House in Washington.
Your country is responsible for at least 50% of the modern age wars throughout the world.”
Zoey nodded lightly, and then hurriedly said: “Mr.
Wade… In fact, I want to say that I am not the kind of banana man…”
Charlie asked curiously: “What is a banana man?”
Zoey quickly explained “Banana man refers to Chinese people who were born and raised in the United
States.
They’re genetically yellow, but have the views and mindset of Western white people.”
Charlie asked with interest: “Don’t you think like western white people?”
Zoey shook her head, “Although I was born and raised in the United States, and am also an American
citizen, my parents taught me since childhood that my roots are in China.
To remember that no matter where I go, I and my heritage are Chinese first and foremost.”
