Bai Yang was speechless. He’d heard rumors of FireThorn City in the Demon Realm. It was said that the citizens were mysterious and had strange appearances. Looking at the man now, what strange appearance?! He just looked like a westerner.
Although, his hair was black.
It was just that Bai Yang didn’t know which language the man spoke?
English? French? German?
Unfortunately, he only had a passing knowledge of those languages.
The hole in Bai Yang’s brain grew bigger and bigger as his imagination ran away from him. Like the Yellow River overflowing, his thoughts poured out. Once started, there was no stopping the flood.
“I didn’t expect our visitor to be the Demon King himself. Excuse me for not coming out to meet you,” the FireThorn City emissary said with his high nose and deep eyes. He bowed at the waist before the Demon King, then looked over at Bai Yang and said with a faint smile, “Lord Xie came as well.”
Bai Yang already thought the Demon King was very handsome. Who would have thought that this man’s smiling face could be just as handsome? The sight was breath-taking and left onlookers enraptured.
Bai Yang was dazzled by it, and his heart started pounding.
The Demon King glanced at him and introduced the man, “This is FireThorn City’s emissary, Long Hai.”
“Mr. Long,” Bai Yang said politely.
He couldn’t stop staring at the emissary. He didn’t think he liked men, but he couldn’t control his own eyes. That man’s body seemed full of extraordinary demonic power. One couldn’t help but be amazed.
What he didn’t see was the Demon King scowling.
“Lord Long, let us be on our way,” the Demon King said, face cold.
Long Hai gave a faint smile. “Please, follow me.”
The emissary led the way with the Demon King and Bai Yang following after him.
Under Long Hai’s guidance, the city that was known for being unapproachable drew closer. The three of them quickly reached the city gates.
They were wide open, and Long Hai led them inside.
Bai Yang was very curious about FireThorn City. As soon as he passed through the gates, he looked around everywhere. He’d imagined the city as a very strange place, but to his disappointment, it seemed normal. Traders were yelling, and demons of all shapes and sizes were milling about. It was just like any other city in the Demon Realm.
Since FireThorn City was surrounded by lava, he thought it would be hot, but after entering the city, he couldn’t feel the heat at all.
It really was a strange city.
“Curious?” Long Hai asked, leaning over from the side with a smile.
Bai Yang disagreed automatically. “Not curious.”
He was a grand General of the Demon Realm. If he was an idiot and revealed too much, he could lose face for the Demon King.
Long Hai continued smiling and said, “Look carefully at him again.”
He pointed at a peddler selling steamed buns beside them.
Bai Yang looked at where he pointed. He’d seen that peddler before. There was nothing special about him. Why did Long Hai want him to look at him?
However, after a moment, Bai Yang noticed something unusual. The peddler’s words and actions were all the same as before. And it wasn’t only him. The people buying steamed buns as well were all exactly the same.
Bai Yang was stunned and looked around. All the people milling about were the same he’d seen before. They were repeating the same track. It was like the people were all NPCs in a video game.
“FireThorn City is cursed,” said Long Hai. “Everybody inside is dead.”
Everybody inside was dead?
Bai Yang stared at Long Hai, a strange look in his eye, and said, “Then, Lord Long…”
Long Hai laughed but didn’t answer. He turned to the Demon King and said, “What has brought Your Majesty to FireThorn City?”
Hearing him mention business, the Demon King’s expression stopped being so cold and aloof, and his attitude softened.
“I heard that the Rebirth Gu came from FireThorn City. I don’t know whether that’s true.”
“Rebirth Gu?” Long Hai thought for a while and said, “Indeed it did, but we don’t call it a Rebirth Gu. We call it a Rebirth Worm.”
“Rebirth Worm?” Bai Yang asked, wanting to get to the bottom of this matter when someone cried out nearby.
“Big brother Demon King!”
Bai Yang was shocked at hearing someone say, “Big Brother Demon King”. After arriving in this world, he heard people address the Demon King in all sorts of ways: Demon King, Your Highness, Your Majesty etc. But he’s never heard anyone call him “Big Brother Demon King.”
Looking toward the sound, Bai Yang saw a young man, about fifteen or sixteen, with Western features. He was beautiful, slim and delicate like colored glass that would shatter if you touched it. He had a pair of sparkling eyes like the purest snow only found atop a high mountain. As soon as one saw him, they’d forget all ordinary people.
Once again, Bai Yang was shocked by someone’s appearance.
The youth had soft black hair, warm brown eyes, and a round face. The corner of his mouth was quirked, which made him look like he was laughing all the time.
Clean, sparkling, perfect.
Those three words instantly came to mind.
It was like these three words were created to describe this youth.
Following at the youth’s side was a man with a gloomy expression wearing a black cloak. He stood silently, like a shadow, which made it easy to forget he was there.
The youth smiled and jogged over. Then, right before a stunned Bai Yang, he rushed directly into the Demon King’s embrace, two arms encircling his waist. He laid his head on the Demon King’s chest and, smiling, said, “You finally came to see Long Bing!”
If an ordinary person approached the Demon King, they wouldn’t be able to touch the corner of the lower hem of his robe before he slipped away from them. This time, the Demon King didn’t evade the youth. Instead, he put a hand on his shoulder and said gently, “City Lord.”
“Don’t call me City Lord. Call me Long Bing,” the youth protested as if wronged. He lifted his head and, with an unhappy look on his face, said, “Calling me City Lord makes us seem like strangers.”
He was the City Lord?!
Bai Yang was shocked.
He’d imagined the leader of FireThorn City as some mysterious and enigmatic being that could have three heads and six arms. Bai Yang didn’t expect him to be such a delicate and harmless youth.
Even Long Hai seemed more like a City Lord than him.
Bai Yang couldn’t tear his gaze away from Long Bing, who acted like a spoiled brat with the Demon King.
Normally, a fifteen or sixteen-year-old boy using such a coquettish tone would cause goosebumps. But when the City Lord did it, it somehow wasn’t annoying. Not only was it not annoying, but it made one want to pamper him.
There was a slight smile on the Demon King’s face. Bai Yang had been by his side for so long that he’d seen all of his smiles, both sincere and fake. Therefore, he could tell that the Demon King was genuinely happy.
“Long Bing.”
“Big Brother Demon King came to FireThorn City to see me?” the youth named Long Bing asked, eyes fluttering, face innocent and naive.
“Something like that,” the Demon King said with a smile.
“Wa, I’m so happy! Big Brother Demon King is amazing!” The youth once again threw himself into the Demon King’s embrace and rubbed his head against his chest.
At first, Bai Yang thought the youth was cute, but he was beginning to feel uncomfortable. The youth was being too pompous and pretentious.
Ha ha, at the drop of a hat this fifteen-or-sixteen-year-old boy will hug other men. How is this proper?
Big Brother Demon King… Big Brother Demon King… can you be any more coquettish?
Bai Yang cut in, “Your Majesty, this is FireThorn City’s City Lord?”
“Yes.” The Demon King’s attention was finally on him. He nodded. “This is our person of interest.”
This kid is really the City Lord?
Bai Yang couldn’t believe it. FireThorn City was well-known throughout the entire Demon Realm. He hadn’t expected the City Lord to be this sparkling and pure youth!
Perhaps there should be quotation marks around “sparkling” and “pure”.
“City Lord,” said Bai Yang, “we’ve traveled a long way to find the antidote to the Rebirth Gu–”
“No way! Big Brother Demon King only just arrived! I don’t want to talk about that. We don’t have it.” Bai Yang hadn’t even finished speaking when Long Bing interrupted him. Long Bing grabbed the Demon King’s hand and said. “Big Brother Demon King, the birds you sent me last time have already hatched into chicks! Why don’t I take you to see them?”
The Demon King sent him birds?
Bai Yang glanced at the Demon King who was still smiling. “Okay.”
“Great!” Long Bing clapped with joy and dragged the Demon King away, completely disregarding Bai Yang who stood still, dumbfounded.
The Demon King said, “Keep up with me,” and followed Long Bing without looking back.
Bai Yang stared after them in disbelief. When had the Demon King ever been so obedient? What kind of relationship did he and the young City Lord have?
Xiao Ling furtively said in his mind, “You can tell at a glance that he’s a himbo who will flirt with anyone. The Demon King shouldn’t like that type, so don’t worry.”
Bai Yang: “…I really don’t care.”
Xiao Ling: “Fine. You don’t care, but I care.”
They were getting farther away. Long Hai walked over and said, “Lord Xie, shall we go as well?”
His smile was gentle, courteous and slightly bewitching. No one could resist that smiling face.
Bai Yang smiled in return and followed him. “Alright.”
The shadow in black followed swiftly after Long Bing.
The five of them walked along the strange street and arrived at an open terrace.
The place was large and circular, with arrays on every surface. Imprisoned within was a red bird. It was huge, with red feathers and a long tail. The bird’s body was tall and thin and on its head was a red crest. It looked both magnificent and graceful.
Following him were three chirping red chicks. Just seeing their plump bodies made people want to ‘aww’.
Bai Yang searched his memory and recognized the bird as a Ming Feng. In ancient times, it was a close relative of the phoenix and very rare. He didn’t even know where the Demon King could have gotten these rare and precious birds to give to Long Bing.
“Look, aren’t they cute?” Long Bing was a little short, so he had to look up at the Demon King. On his right cheek was a cute dimple.
Drop dead!!!
How could a boy be this cute?
Bai Yang silently judged them. Every time he saw an intimate scene between the Demon King and Long Bing, he felt it was unsightly. Bai Yang didn’t say anything. He turned, looking to start a conversation with Long Hai, who was still smiling and standing off to the side.
“Lord Long mentioned the Rebirth Gu. Could you tell me about its origins?”
T/N: Sorry about the hiatus! Bai Yang, don’t lose heart!
