Chapter 705 Night Proposal
After a few more hours, the banquet was over and the two representatives returned back to their room to rest. Jason stayed in the hall until the last guest returned back, except for Laura.
"Good work, Jason," Neo walked into the room with a laptop on his hand. He was grinning like a fool.
"What are you planning right now, Neo?"
"I'm watching the security camera all these times and I have to admit that you're really amazing, Jason," Neo put a thumb up. "You're making sure that they're all in their right place."
Jason rolled his eyes. "What are you talking about?"
"I mean, the nobles. This is the first time I see them making way for someone else," Neo shrugged. "Anyway, I'll send them to you for you to check if there's anyone suspicious."
Jason's face darkened at the thought of work again. He was already busy working lately to be their guide and now he had to check if there was anyone suspicious? It would just increase his workload.
"It's not like you're the one who has to work by yourself, but I'll greatly appreciate it." Neo smirked.
"Just do it yourself," Jason refused immediately.
"Don't you want to help your friend?" Neo rolled his eyes in annoyance. It was not really Jason's job, but he was already dead tired ever since a few days ago. Trying to find help here and there became one of his priorities.
"If you can do it yourself, it'll be better. I'm already weary after a long time of work," He looked at Laura, who was standing not far from him. "I still have some matters to attend, so I won't be accompanying you."
Neo shook his head lightly. He groaned at the thought of pulling another all-nighter again because of work. These two representatives' matters would kill him by taking his sleep away soon.
Jason walked over to Laura slowly. He smiled tenderly at the young girl. "Do you have fun, Laura?"
"Not really," Laura shrugged. "Staying in the spotlight for hours and putting on a smile all the time is not something that you can consider as fun."
"You seem to be enjoying it in my eyes."
"Well, I have to keep on since I'll be doing this for a long time. By the way, how are you? You're not resting properly lately because you're busy accompanying them, right?" Laura looked at Jason worriedly.
Jason raised his hand and patted the girl's head. "I'll rest properly, sweetheart. There's no need to worry so much."
"That's what you say in the phone too," Laura pointed to his eyes. There were some dark circles that started to show up because he didn't sleep properly. "I don't want to see you look like a panda, so take care of yourself well."
"I promise that I'll take care of myself, Laura."
"Good."
As the two of them were talking in the hall, Kevin returned back with Kanae. This time, they didn't head over to their room, but instead to the rooftop. It was late at night, so the place was empty. Aside from the beautiful stars illuminating the light, there was nothing else accompanying them.
"I thought you promised me that you'll order more food for me," Kanae remarked as she leaned on the fence. Her eyes followed after the steps that she made on the snowy rooftop. There were many other footsteps because it was not snowing lately.
"We can eat later," Kevin replied. "What have you found from the two representatives today?"
"They're interesting," Kanae glanced to the sky. Even though the two representatives were living a completely different life, they could get used with this place after a few days. It was not something normal people could do if they didn't have any experience before.
"What do you think they will write in their report?"
Kanae didn't immediately answer. She thought about their report and the possibility of them writing bad things as she sighed internally. Even though Jason had done his best in making sure that they were comfortable, there was no telling what these two might say.
Raising her head to look at the sky, Kanae fixated her gazes on the stars. "I never expect to see stars in the middle of a city like this."
Kevin knew that Kanae was trying to change the subject, so he obliged. "This building is one of the tallest ones in this city. At this height, it's still possible to see some of the stars. If you want to see more, you need to go to mountain peaks or in some rural areas."
"I know," Kanae said softly. She turned her head to Kevin. "I'm sure you have your reason to call me here, right? For a beautiful place like this, it's not normal for the place to be empty if it's not because of an order."
Kevin showed a faint smile on his face. As expected of Kanae, she could guess that he didn't come here because of superficial reasons. He walked closer to the fence and placed his hand on top of them as he looked at Kanae.
Their conversation from several days ago played over in his head. He still remembered when she told him that his life would be filled with danger. It crossed his mind that this kind of life might not be suitable for Kanae, but it was something that he wanted her to be part of it.
"I want to know something," Kevin slowly spoke. Even though his expression didn't change, his tone quivered slightly. "Have you ever thought about living your life as an ordinary person, away from the dangerous world in Black Street?"
Kanae stared back. "Many times, over and over I think about it."
"I see," Kevin replied softly. He should have expected it. After all, the lives that Kanae should have was not within the Black Street, but within the normal people outside.
"But I know that it's not going to happen," Kanae chuckled. "I know that I can never leave the Black Street. Even if I try to live normally, my way of thinking has been influenced by the way of rules in Black Street. Besides, it's not like I have any place to go right now."
Her sister basically kicked her out of the family months ago. For that, she felt rather grateful. She has always been in a dilemma when choosing, so her sister's action was a great help for her.
Kevin stared back at Kanae for a few seconds. He started slowly. "My life is going to be filled with danger. Even though I want to change the city to make the underworld disappear slowly, I'm still a big target. I don't know how long it will last, but I wish for you to accompany me in every situation."
Looking back at the man before her, Kanae could feel the fluctuation of emotion within his eyes. She knew that he never wanted to place her in danger and chose to hide some things in the past. He respected her decision, so he would never force her to do anything that she didn't like.
Kanae smiled. "I have lived through countless dangers in the past. Every single second can spell my death if I'm not careful enough, but it's always worth it when I can stay with those whom I love and care about. The long day becomes short when I stay with you, so I also hope that you won't push me away for staying by your side."
"I will never push you away," Kevin stretched out his hand and grabbed Kanae's wrist. He pulled her closer and placed his hand on the back of her head before kissing her forehead. "I just want you to stay safe."
"I'm not a weak girl," Kanae circled her arm to hug Kevin. Resting her head on his broad chest, she closed her eyes. "There's always a risk in anything that I do. I love you."
Kevin smiled. "I love you too."
The two of them stayed in the same position as Kevin continued to caress Kanae's hair. The soft and silky hair felt extremely comfortable in his palm.
Kevin slowly released Kanae from his embrace. He looked at the young girl's face tenderly. "This might be a bit early and slightly rushed, but I wish for your hand in marriage."
Hearing the word 'marriage', Kanae's mind blanked a bit. This was modern time, so it was unusual for them to marry that quickly. She would only be 18 in a few days, so her mind couldn't catch up.
"I…"
"You don't have to answer that quickly if you're not ready," Kevin smiled. "This is a bit sudden, and we have only known each other for two or so years."
"Correction, we have met with each other when we're still a kid," Kanae chuckled, reminding the man about their encounter. Even though it was only a short encounter, it happened during important moments of their lives.
"You're right, so it's 9 years?"
"That's pretty long if you consider using that way," Kanae thought about it. Even though they have only met very often in the past two years, they had learned a lot of things about each other. There were still many things that they could discover.
Kevin nodded his head. His hand was still caressing the girl's hair as he enjoyed the soft touch he had. "Indeed.
Looking at the tender gaze he gave her, Kanae recalled numerous experiences she had with him. From the very beginning, he has always been her close friend. From coaxing her into the Student Council, offering a job in his company, and then becoming her fiancé.
Her life has been interlocking with him on many occasions. Even though they might have some different paths in the future, they have been together for a long time. Marriage is a beginning and not the end. It was also a promise that they would stay together for the rest of their lives.
The rest of their lives.
She had never thought this far, but the phrase seemed rather nice in her ear. Opening her eyes, she smiled at Kevin. "If I'm good enough."
Kevin couldn't connect for a split second. Happiness flashed on his eyes as he realized the meaning of Kanae's words. A smile appeared on his face. "You're perfect for me."
Leaning in, he locked her lips with his own.
