The Surgeon’s Studio Chapter 900 - Lend a Hand

Chapter 900: Lend a Hand

After the pre-operation discussion ended, Chief Kong put his hands behind his back and called Zheng Ren to his side. As he walked, he said, “The method you just mentioned is too risky. Is there any other way?”
“Chief Kong, I don’t think so,” Zheng Ren said. “I don’t think Chief Miao can continue with the surgery. A kidney transplant should be the last resort. If the family doesn’t agree to do it, there really isn’t any other way.”
“To take a kidney, it can be done with minimally invasive surgery. Moreover, the distance is also close, so it saves a preservation step. However, the burn area of the burn patient needs invasive surgery. Just thinking about it gives me a headache. How did you come up with this idea?”
“I was forced to,” Zheng Ren said honestly. “Both of the kidneys are broken. Even if I can barely suture them, I don’t dare say that there won’t be any bleeding after the surgery, but I’m sure that they won’t have normal kidney function. The patients will still die. They won’t even be able to reach the oliguria stage of hemorrhagic shock.
“For burn patients, ninety-five per cent of them will have third-degree burns or more. They won’t even be able to find the skin flap after the skin graft. I think that even if they can be saved, the cost will be more than two million yuan.
“With such a high price and such a slim chance, I might as well take a gamble.”
Chief Kong did not have any good ideas either. Similarly, he knew that the others would not be able to do anything either.
What Zheng Ren said was the only way to solve this problem.
Deputy Director Yuan’s sudden appearance in the operating theater was definitely a major incident. Zhou Litao, who was in the Emergency Department, had mentioned that it should have something to do with the school loan.
No matter how many twists and turns there were behind the incident, as long as the patient was still breathing, doctors had to do their best to save him.
However, Deputy Director Yuan had one advantage when he came to directing the resuscitation. When it involved multi-disciplinary cooperation, someone had made the decision. This was especially so for the plan that Zheng Ren proposed. It also involved a major matter like organ transplantation.
If the patient’s kidneys were found to be irreparably damaged and the plan was reported to the director of the Medical Administration Division, a series of procedures would be carried out, and the patient would die on the stage.
However, who would dare to directly pull a patient with severe burns onto the stage to do such a thing?
Chief Kong thought about it for a few times. Although he felt that Zheng Ren’s plan was a little risky, he did not have any other way. He whispered a few words to him.
He would just go back and wait. He did not know when the surgery would be scheduled to continue, or if he should just forget about it.
When he returned to the operating theater, Chief Miao’s expression was particularly unpleasant. He moved a small stool and sat in the operating theater. The others tactfully did not go in to disturb him.
If he encountered such a thing, if he were to go to a smaller hospital, they would stop the bleeding directly and then close the abdomen. They could just go down and explain the patient’s condition to the patient’s family. The patient would definitely die sooner or later.
If the family acknowledged it, then it would be acknowledged. If they did not acknowledge it, there was nothing they could do. They could only go to the Medical Administration Division and leave the matter to them to handle.
If they were unable to step down from the stage, or if they knew that the patient would definitely die when they stepped down from the stage… This kind of thing was the biggest headache for surgeons.
If they worked themselves to death, they would not feel any sense of accomplishment at all. They might even get into a lot of trouble.
Chief Miao sat in the operating theater with a gloomy face. No one went up to him.
Zheng Ren also obediently followed by Chief Kong’s side and became invisible. He was thinking about it. No wonder the System determined that it was an S-rank surgery. It was even higher than an autologous liver transplant. It turned out that there were many things that he could not decide for himself.
The System probably did not want to waste resources to calculate and evaluate. That was why it did not give him a reward. If he could perform the surgery, then he gain a reward. If he could not do it, then this mission would not exist.
“Boss Zheng, Chief Miao is calling for you.” Zheng Ren was in a daze when he suddenly heard Chief Kong talking to him.
Huh? Why did Chief Miao call for him? Zheng Ren had originally planned to give up.
After going through the initial emergency treatment period, Zheng Ren also expressed his opinion. He believed that all of this had nothing to do with him.
He did not expect that Chief Miao, who had an unhappy expression on his face, would actually look for him.
Zheng Ren saw Chief Miao looking at him through the lead-lined glass in a daze. He had no choice but to brace himself and walk in.
“Boss Zheng, have you done a kidney transplant before?” Chief Miao asked.
“No,” Zheng Ren said. “I used to be a doctor in the General Surgery Department, so I haven’t had any experience with kidney transplants.”
“The last time I had a patient with liver hydatid disease, I felt that you did a pretty good job with a liver transplant. Where did you learn to do it?” Chief Miao asked.
Zheng Ren could not answer.
Where did he learn to do it? In the System space.
But could he say it? It was definitely not possible.
“I’ve read some information. In the past, in Sea City, I met a similar patient. I had no choice but to bite the bullet,” Zheng Ren randomly explained.
If one’s IQ was average, no one would believe his two sentences.
However, Chief Miao did not ask further, nor did he question it. His eyes narrowed slightly. After a few breaths, he said, “I reckon that the hospital will agree to the surgery. In a while, give me a hand.”
“…” Zheng Ren was stunned for a moment. Then, he smiled bitterly and said, “Chief Miao, I’m not…”
“You’re in the 912. You’re only a doctor in the Department of Interventional Medicine. You’ve performed many surgeries there.” Chief Miao’s eyes suddenly opened. He glared at Zheng Ren and raised his voice slightly. “What’s the matter? Do you want me to go to the hospital and talk about it?”
“Look at what you said.” Zheng Ren smiled bitterly.
“It’s settled then,” Chief Miao said. “Kidney transplants, huh? It’s not that difficult. You can do an autogenous liver transplant, so why can’t you do a kidney transplant? Besides, I didn’t ask you to do it. You’re just an assistant.”
After he finished speaking, he looked at Zheng Ren’s terrified expression and smiled.
“What are you panicking for?” he said softly.
Zheng Ren really did not want to perform this surgery.
It was not because of anything else, but just because it was a kidney transplant. Compared to other surgeries, the difficulty level was the lowest. There was no reason that Chief Miao could not do it.
If he could do it, and he could do it well, why should he go beyond his authority?
This was completely different from the patients who encountered liver hydatidosis.
Whether it was liver hydatidosis or porcelain gallbladder, the difficulty level of the surgery was close to the sky. Even with the skill level of a legend, he still needed to train many times before he could complete it.
Why bother to do a kidney transplant?
Zheng Ren was a little helpless, but looking at Chief Miao’s expression, Zheng Ren could not guess what he was thinking.
‘If I have to do it, then do it. It doesn’t matter anymore,’ Zheng Ren thought.
“If you want to do a transplant surgery–if,” Chief Miao suddenly said, “How much of the patient’s remaining kidney do you have the confidence to leave behind?”
“The upper extremity, plus the adrenal gland. I estimate that the total left will be about fifteen per cent,” Zheng Ren said after some thought.
“Okay,” Chief Miao said lightly. “Fifteen per cent of the right kidney. That’s pretty good.”
As he said that, someone came to inform him that Deputy Director Yuan had done the work for the patient’s family and agreed to reduce part of the hospitalization fees as a humanitarian concern.
Chief Miao stood up and arranged for a group of professors to communicate with the patient’s family and sign the papers. He reminded them of some things to take note of before saying, “Boss Zheng, I’ll go wash my hands first. You should also prepare for this meeting.”
