The fat captain had a friendly appearance and a very nice temperament, but it was evident that the workers on the mining spaceship were all afraid of him.
It was not because he used the half-a-meter long elegant broadsword to manicure his fingernails.
He had killed few people and met even fewer people in Chaotian, but the people there were all afraid of him even though they respected him very much, just like the people here.
Cao Yuan headed toward the place with the most stars without hesitation after he left the bamboo chair; as such, he had encountered the humans in the Federation of the Milky Way earlier than Jian Xilai.
The mining spaceships were the most-often seen man-made devices in space. It so happened that the first thing from the civilization of the Federation of the Milky Way he came across was a mining spaceship.
The subsequent story of his was totally different from Jian Xilai’s.
The mining spaceship he encountered was quite dilapidated, which was bought jointly by more than twenty miners who dreamed of getting rich overnight. Unexpectedly, the ores they had mined after using all of their savings were robbed by the space pirates.
The miners were in despair. Some of them intended to become the space pirates themselves out of anger and despair.
Cao Yuan couldn’t bear listening to their bickering; he squeezed through the door of the ore compartment and started to dissuade the group.
The workers on the mining spaceship were startled, wondering where this fat man came from.
Several ferocious ones among them thought he was a thief and picked up the weapons, ready to kill him.
The outcome could be easily predicted.
Cao Yuan didn’t use any force, dissuading them patiently. And it didn’t take long before he actually convinced them.
Of course, everybody, including himself, knew that the real reason for the success of his persuasion was his fighting prowess.
The mining spaceship returned to the transfer station.
For some reason, Cao Yuan had convinced a mining company to allow this dilapidated mining spaceship to join them.
From that day on, this dilapidated mining spaceship started shuttling between the No. Three Forward Base and a few adjacent mining planets.
The mining was always hazardous work. The conflicts often occurred on the No. Three Forward Base even though it attracted the attention of the entire Federation of the Milky Way. The conflicts occurred because of the disagreements about the arrangements of which team would mine the ores before the others after the explosion on the surface of the mining planet and of which spaceship would leave before the others, and the arrangement of the wharfs when the windstorm occurred. How would the arrangements be made?
It of course depended on the fighting prowess.
Cao Yuan was someone who was a strenuous fat man.
And he had a broadsword of half a meter long.
Gradually, nobody dared bully this dilapidated mining spaceship anymore. And he won the respect and awe from his colleagues; so he had no choice but to become their captain.

The dilapidated mining spaceship landed on the No. Three Forward Base. Twenty some miners ran towards the residential area while shouting after they bade farewell to Cao Yuan properly.
The workload for the year had already been completed. From that day on, all the profits made by the mining spaceship would be theirs. Thinking of the wealth and delicious wines and beautiful women awaiting them in the residential area, the miners couldn’t help but feel delighted.
Cao Yuan let out a smile, but didn’t say anything. He had to restrain himself from committing sins, it didn’t mean that he would forbid the others from doing so.
He walked around the mining spaceship once with the broadsword in his hands, and repaired the spots in need.
His iron broadsword could be used to manicure the fingernails and to repair the spaceship. In his eyes, it was more reliable than any of those automatic mechanic repairing arms.
Having done all this, he headed toward the forest.
This planet was indeed a bit peculiar, where the green trees were more than a thousand feet tall, covering the entire planet; it was a magnificent landscape.
Besides these tall green trees, this planet didn’t have many of other lifeforms. It was unclear how such a singular biosystem came into being and how it was maintained.
The Science Academy couldn’t decide if this planet had been modified by the distant ancient civilization even though the scientists had many hypotheses.
Cao Yuan was not living in the residential area. He lived in a shelter he had built himself in the forest.
He was used to living alone, and he didn’t want the others to see what he was doing.
Amid the buzzing sound of the computers he took a shower and had two fruits, and then rested for three minutes with his eyes closed before he started his usual work in the evening.
Seven computers were turned on at the same time. The screens were almost overlapping atop each other, countless data and words flashing on them.
Sitting cross-legged on the floor with his broadsword on his knees, Cao Yuan formed a lotus bridge while gazing at the screens quietly, as if he were in a trance.
The first thing the ascendants of Chaotian did after they came to this world was to study.
Afterwards, they would study more, incessantly.
Unlike Jing Jiu and Jian Xilai, Cao Yuan only spent his first few days learning about this civilization; after that he focused his attention to something else.
The thing he focused his attention on was…the Sea of Dark Matter, rather than the military battleships and their weaponry; nor did he focus on learning how to kill others and defending or hiding himself more effectively.
He found that the humans in Chaotian and in this world were basically the same kind.
On the other hand, those monsters of the Sea of Dark Matter, or the heavenly demons of the outside world, were the foes of the humans, which made them his foes as well.
He had guarded Chaotian alone with his broadsword in the wind and snow for hundreds of years, and he made the same choice here as well.
After he had learned the knowledge of the networks, he spent all of his efforts on this matter. It was not an exaggeration to say that he had learned more about the monsters of the Sea of Dark Matter than anyone in the Federation of the Milky Way.
Yet, the more he had learned about them, the stranger he felt. It was because he felt that he was kind of familiar with those destructive monsters of the darkness.
One day, he suddenly came up with a conjecture though he couldn’t have it confirmed yet.
It was then that the blaring alarm reached his ears after passing through the formation he had deployed.
He came out with the broadsword in his hands and walked out of the hut with one step and arrived in the forest with another.
The night sky was illuminated by the high-power spotlights. A dreadful scene lay in front of his eyes.
Countless black tentacles were swaying in the sky several thousand meters above the ground, looking like the ocean weeds or leather whips.
These black tentacles were more dreadful than anything in this world. It seemed that they would slice the sky and distant stars into pieces.
A mining spaceship that had returned after loading the ores was tangled among the tentacles and broke into pieces instantly. All the crew on the ship had turned into bloody pulps, falling down from the sky.
This was the invasion of the Sea of Dark Matter.
Cao Yuan leapt up in the air and arrived in the night sky before the defense system of the base began to respond.
The starlight reflecting off his head looked more gorgeous.
The iron broadsword hacked down with a faint chopping sound.

The slain monster looked like a rigid leather object falling down from the high sky, and was on the verge of crushing into a building.
The light of the broadsword flashed again; the monster was sliced into tiny pieces.
Pah!!! Pah!!! Pah!!!
The residential area experienced a horrific rainfall.
Cao Yuan landed on a big tree. He looked around the forest, his ears twitching slightly. He heard a rustling sound in the distance, thinking that this planet was indeed extraordinary.
Back when he first came to the No. 3 Forward Base, he found it peculiar after he saw the forest.
He didn’t feel so good about this place even though he couldn’t put a finger on it.
As suspected, the monsters of the Sea of Dark Matter had shown up.
As he was about to go into the forest to kill other monsters, a faint glow flashed in a treetop a few kilometers away. It was a man.
The middle-aged man looked rather scholar-like. He wore a pair of glasses and fitting suit, giving off a certain sort of aura.
Cao Yuan was quite familiar with such a feeling; it was called the scholarly bearing. He had seen and sensed it many times on the bodies of those scholars at the One-Cottage House.
“It’s quite outstanding to kill a third-level target with a swing of the broadsword. You haven’t considered how to protect yourself after you came to this new world, but concerned yourself with saving others. That’s truly impressive.”
The middle-aged man continued with a smile while nudging his glasses up a little, “No wonder you can take the last test directly. Let me introduce myself: I’m the one who will test you.”
Cao Yuan had believed that there must be some ascendants in the Federation of the Milky Way.
He hadn’t thought of finding them; it was because he knew that they would find him instead.
He also understood what the test meant. He had no objection to the test, but he didn’t think this was the right time to do it.
The rustling sound in the forest drew closer, and the surprised cries and the sound of gunfire broke out in the residential area.
“Let me kill those monsters first.”
Cao Yuan intended to go into the forest while holding the broadsword. Thinking the man was a Cultivation practitioner of this world and must know more about the military defense system, he intended to leave the protection of the residential area to this man.
“Hold it.”
The middle-aged man went on, “This invasion is a small scale one, and it will take the whole night to kill them one by one. I don’t have time for this since I have to go to the Yinhai Nebula.”
Cao Yuan turned toward the man, wondering what better method this highly achieved practitioner of the previous generation had for solving the matter of invasion.
The middle-aged man pushed up the glasses slightly before saying, “Let me do it.”
No sooner had he said that than hundreds of round orbs the size of a thumbnail emerged from his body and shot out in all directions at a high speed with a dreadful whistling sound.
The round orbs were semitransparent and slightly red, devoid of any bloody scent; in fact, they looked rather pretty.
For some reason, Cao Yuan didn’t feel so good when he saw the red orbs.
Pah!!! Pah!!! Pah!!!
The faint rupturing sounds could be heard in the forest and nearby residential area.
A great many fogs rose up, covering the forest the area of twenty square kilometers after they connected with one another.
The residential area was enshrouded in the fog.
It was evident that this was caused by the night wind.
The fog suddenly grew redder when it met the starlight, looking like the fresh blood.
Dozens of huge trees looked as if they were monsters after they were penetrated by the darkness, losing all life force and turning into rigid lifeless objects.
What about those people living in the residential area?
The surprised cries and dreadful screams had ceased; it was soundless. The only noise was the friction-like sound of the bases of the weapon platforms rotating.

The dead people were everywhere on the streets.
It was the same in a pub.
A young man with oil stains on his clothing stooped over a prostitute; his face showed a baffled expression, and his body was as rigid as a stone.
“If I die, I’ll die on top of a woman.”
Seeing this, Cao Yuan thought of the statement on the mining spaceship about thirty days ago; the corners of his mouth curled up, showing a faint smile.
This smile looked rather eerie on the street full of corpses and bloody fog.
The middle-aged man came before a dining table and took a tissue on it. “What’s the matter?” he asked while cleaning the lenses of his glasses.
“I’m fine.” Cao Yuan shook his head while gripping the hilt of his broadsword firmly.
